what do you listen to when you write?

Sometimes I listen to nothing more than the computer humming... but I find if I listen to something I can have a better focus.

However, I can't listen to anything lyrical since it distracts me and gets me thinking about the lyrics, with the exception of a couple Korean bands that I like (Yellow Kitchen and Witches) since I understand little to nothing of what they're saying.

Mostly I listen to:
I-Tunes, ambient channel (Limbik Frequencies)
Pole (German dubb band)
Main (UK dubb band)
Tortoise (US instrumental rock)
Yellow Kitchen (Korean experimental/electronica)
Witches (Korean ska)

anyone else?

For me it varies depending on my mood or the mood of the piece I'm writing. For violent scenes such as battles etc, I tend to listen to rock / heavy metal music, although James Blunt's "No Bravery" also features heavily. For more melancholic stuff I'll listen to people like Marc Cohn & James Blunt... I have a pretty reasonable mix of music on my PC, so I've got most moods covered...

This thread isn't quite the same, but still relates to music whilst writing

Usually instrumental - 19th century classical stuff like Rachmaninoff and Brahms, or jazz like Bill Evans Trio and Herbie Hancock.

Death metal works well, too, as the vocals are usually too abrasive for me to make out the words and the fast tempos make me want hit things. Since I don't have enough money to replace things I may break by hitting them, I just try to keep typing.

Usually I'll listen to music before I start writing, to get in the mood, and then turn it off when I start. Otherwise I find myself losing ym train of thought and typing Muse lyrics.

I listen to a lot of stuff. Sometimes i'll listen to music, sometimes I'll listen to the AC run, and other times I listen to my heart.

The hum of the computer, the purr of the cat(s). Outside, the wind rustles the leaves and there's always at least one of the roosters chiming in with his opinion.

I'll usually tune into NPR for Fresh Air, All Things Considered, and their broadcast of noon news from the Beeb - if I'm lazy I leave it on and have classical as sonic-wallpaper.

If I want to listen to something lyrical, I put in old-time (1920s-30s) country and blues CDs. Though I find that it distracts me from actually writing, it does provide inspiration.

I don't listen to anything any more. I used to put on a CD to get me in the mood, but I discovered that when I was really into my writing, the CD would come to an end without my noticing. So I don't bother any more!

Hey, we are alike! I would listen to lyrics first then music, so, yes, whenever i start writing, all musics are off !

But, yes sometimes, i do listen to music first to get me into the mood...

Peace
Jasmine

I don't really have a problem with lyrics. I hear them, but not in the same way that most people do -- i don't really hear what the words MEAN so much, but how they sound. So, no, they don't distract me.

Anyway, to answer your question, way less Eno than I should be listening to.

Sometimes I like complete silence when I write, other times I like listening to slow music. Lifehouse has some great slow songs. I like listening to Jeff buckley and John Butler. Depends really. I have a few different mix albums I made with writing music, depending on my mood.
Silence or slow music.
