How to go about writing a conspiracy

How do you guys go about writing a conspiracy? What I am refering to is finding the actual hidden information in the story. Like if your trying to find information on say: side effects for a drug that are being suppressed. Another example would be the Tabacco industry supressing the truth about the dangers of smoking etc... there must of been files on it and they just kept it to themselves. Is it as simple as the files being locked up in the Company? and you just have the characters somehow get themselves into the building etc? I've watched The X files and shows like that, that give you ideas but just wanted your thoughts and ideas.

Thanks
Sean

Don't forget "Deep Throat" the anonymous caller who blew open the Watergate scandal. Having a hidden character revealing information to the mains (for his/her own agenda of course) makes for a bit of neat intrigue. Also, as in illegal drug testing or contamination conspiracies, the initial information is often found by observing the people unwittingly involved. Seeing strange similarities in symptoms among sick people etc.

a hacker can occasionally get into company records and stuff to find out hidden information. There are a lot fo ways that someone can find out information, like reading a book, watching tv, internet, etc. all of thos ethings could have info about the conspiracy.

If a smart company finds out that someone is on to them they can try to start spreadin disinfo. That could be using their media connections to start making make a news report about the supposed conspiracy but all the info is way wrong. This could thow the people that know about it off track.

Hakeem is an unknown quantity at this point
Well usually companies and big corporations (talking Wolfram & Hart here) usually resort to the best measures for their filthy secrets not to be found or heard about, so think really hard about how are your characters are going to find about that little filthy secret in a way that does not insult the reader..

It sounds a very pleasant idea, but you really shouldn't listen to ours because they are going to affect yours, so create the main idea then add a little bit here and there using the help you can find here.

As I understand it, the Enron scandle had been predicted by a handful of business journalists well in advance. They had simply said "the figures don't quite add up", and were able to reconstruct much of their corporate troubles from careful looks at the company prospectus and press releases.

Unflattering things about US officials and policies are occassionally uncovered when a friendly dictator falls and watchdog groups get hold of their records.

Often the problem is not that the information is hidden away in some vault (or encrypted file), but that it's "hidden in plain sight" among stacks of unimportant info.

Odd financial transactions are often a bit of a give away - paying people off to hide or discredit research results, paying bribes etc... Although this type of transaction is often disguised as multiple legitimate transactions that just happen to end up (eventually) in a single account...

People trying to bury news will often try to hide press releases etc on days when there are dramatic events (I seem to remember someone being sacked from the UK government for stating that either 9/11 or 7/7 was a good day to bury bad news...)

Think of the different players involved in your conspiracy and then think about what part they play - are they financial backers? are they researchers? are they doctors bribed to prescribe a potentially unsafe drug? are they patients involved in a faked clinical trial? etc... then think about how they might be silenced or bought off, what liability they pose to the company involved, how they company might wish to compensate them or dispose of them etc...

Just my thoughts (sorry it was a bit of a brain dump...)
