Pages and word count comparison

Ok. When I sit here at my computer and I do a word count on a work, I have a hard time invisioning just how many pages that word count will average when in book format. I realize this doesn't seem that important, but it bothers me. Can some one please at least give me an idea?
I did a quick guestimation, using a 490 page published book and came up with 200,000 words. Does that seem about right?
Thanks

That will vary tremendously based on page size, font size, font type, margins etc.

If it really, really bothers you, change page set-up to whatever page size you would expect, then look at the page info that your word processor gives you.

For the fun of it, try various common fonts, changing the font size up or down a point, or changing to 1.5 spaced lines and see how much it changes.

I've heard from a few people (but never directly, so take with a grain of salt) that the average, trade-paperback page runs between 250-300 words. It's proven fairly accurate in my experience, but again, I'm not 100% positive on it.

Average 250 words per printed page therefore a 300 page novel would equate to approx 75k words.

using courier 12 pt and the standard margins, your own printed page and the printed hard cover's will contain approximately the same average number of words...

i've found that pbs average 300-350 ppp, depending on font/pt size...
