Kane wins!
Engraving is cutting or scratching a design into metal. Etching is generally done with acid.

I didn't know it was a competition. So, I guess my old etch-a-sketch was acid based all those years ago. Pretty dangerous toy to put in the hand of a kid.

Actually, etch is right too. It's a dual-meaning word.
etch [ech]
(past and past participle etched, present participle etch·ing, 3rd person present singular etch·es)
v
1. vti design cut design into something with acid: to create a design or drawing on the surface of something, especially a printing plate, by the action of an acid
2. vti cut marks with something sharp: to cut a design or mark into the surface of something using a sharp point or laser beam
So either way...

Engraving would be a more specific term though.

Duh, I don't think your etch-a-sketch actually scratched metal either. Sorry to disappoint.

Clearly Mike you have put me in my place. I am a worthless human being and inferior to you in every way. You are the undisputed master of ALL knowledge and I am but a waste of human flesh. Now, I will terminate my existence, for it is an insult to your unsearchable wisdom and profound intellect for the two of us to reside in the same space/time dimension. Please forgive me for the affront my presence here has caused to your majesty.
Goodbye cruel world!

Yeah but etching is less syllables, so it's faster to read ... we could argue about which word is better all day, and it wouldn't matter, because I'm sure that imrhati has already decided what he wants to use.
Buddhapants, maybe you should take a nice long breath and realize that you're posting on the internet and all of us are just text on a screen, so a thread about words probably isn't important enough to get upset about?
