Maia, I completely disagree; scratch doesn't imply the artistry (scratch a design, as requested by the poster) shown by "engrave" or "etch".

Any of the three words are fine if it's casual. If it's very technical, then use etch and engrave when appropriate.
IMO I think scratch is most casual, etch second, and engrave the most fancy-sounding

As an ex-engraver, we used the word etch for what the machine-engraving did, barely scratching the surface of the cups, trays etc & engraving for what we did where the tool actually cut through the surface metal to display the base metal underneath.

If it makes any difference, I was going to suggest etch as well, but figured one word would do. Really... can't we talk about the simplest of things without arguing about it?

It's not argument to point out the difference between right and wrong. Personally I like to be sure I'm using the right word in the right circumstance. If people have hissy-fits because their error is highlighted, that's not my problem.
