What's the word I'm looking for?

I learned a word once that meant "pleasant sounding". Now I can't think of it. Anyone have any idea?

Cacophonous means bad-sounding.

Euphonous means nice-sounding.

I'm a bit old fashioned, I guess, but you get the same desired effect..... http://thesaurus.reference.com/

sonorous? (though more towards fuller and/or richer...)

mellifluous? (not limited to descriptions of sounds)

dulcet? (my vote to match your question)

you've got a bunch of other choices, from harmonious to melodious to literal things like "sweet-sounding".

one thing i've found: once you go to a thesaurus for a word, for the next six hours you can't think of a single synonym from scratch in your own head without returning to the damn book to look every little thing up... anyone else get that?

don't see how, since it's not a word... the one you want is probably 'euphonious'... or 'euphonic'... though i like 'mellifluous' better, because it flows so prettily off the tongue...

personally, I find "euphonious" more pleasant sounding. There's no possibly-nasal N in it like "sonorous", and no strange accent like "mellifluous".

"Euphonious" is two iambs, Shakespeare would approve it for sonnets.

I think that words should sound good and flow easily off the tongue. However, I also think that you must consider your audience. If they have to go to a thesaurus or dictionary to find out what you are saying, many with not do so. If you are writing for an intellectual audience then by all means use the word. I think it is also a good idea to challenge a reader, just be careful how much.

If you want to use a complex word and you think the reader might be put off by it, you can:
a) get rid of it
b) put some context into it: build up with synonyms, other description, etc.

for an example of b), I'll use "euphonious"

The wind blew about the gazebos, where a string quartet played a slow tune. The wind, euphonous, light, was a fifth member, whistling and rolling about them.

euphonous, or euphonious?... imo, the latter has a more euphonious sound...

dictionary.com lists both versions as legitimate.
