Help with My Idea

Hi, i'm new here. And it's only recently that I got into writing. I'm only 14, but I think that i've got a good idea on my hands. It's about a colony of humans which were cut off from the humanity for an extended period of time, and when they were rediscovered their appearance was still humanoid, but radically different due to such a long period of isolation and the climate of the world which they had colonized. my story deals with a court case to determine whether these colonists are still human, but centers mainly around the efforts of purists to scare the aberrated colonists into not asking to be reintegrated into humanity's government. i'm just looking for some similar reading, because this issue is of great interest to me.

sounds very like something i might've seen on 'the outer limits' or one of those things...

it is indeed an intriguing concept... you might do a search on imdb.com to see if it's been done in one of the tv series, as i'm recalling... and an amazon search should come up with anything similar in book form...

as part of your research, you should check out all the current controversy over the ethics of human cloning, which is somewhat related on the morality and acceptance side of things...

your age seems to not limit your imagination... go for it!

love and hugs, maia

Maybe you could broaden your search to historical fiction and "based on true story"s of race relations. Some such stories use a trial as a pretext to explore such issues with regards to black/white relations (and other such groups). Unfortunately I can't think of any names off the top of my head, but I know it's been done.

Hmm, I think "Snow Falling On Cedars" deals with some of those issues if I remember right - though I don't remember the trial centering explicitly on whether Japanese-Americans were citizens or not.

Your idea brought to mind The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin. It takes place on a planet populated as an experiment, the people there are human except that they have no gender. They go through a sort of mating cycle and become male or female for a brief period when it's time to mate. The main character is a guy who's job it is to try to convince the planet to join the human alliance thingy and he faces some opposition, similar to how some people on your colony don't want to join humanity's government. You should definitely check it out.
