Okay.. I'll bite.

1.How many of you are writing fantasy?
What I'm working on right now could be considered fantasy, though not in the traditional sense, so Yes.

2. If you are writing fantasy, how many of you are writing novels?
I am writing a novel, but only because the story is too detailed to be a short story.

3. If you are writing fantasy novels, how many of you are planning a multi-book project?
Who knows? I'm certainly not planning on it but I wouldn't rule out a stand alone sequel before I've even finished the first book. I guess that's a no.

4. If you are writing a multi-book fantasy project, how many of you are between thirteen and seventeen?
I'm 25

Yes, yes, yes and yes/no (begun before I turned 1.

Except I already have publishers interested in it... and it's also not full fledged fantasy; it's more coming of age/ sci-fi/fantasy/teen books.

And I really hope your theory's not out of malice : )

The theory has nothing to do with malice, or the questions really. I asked the questions because I'm interested in how many people write fantasy and whether there's really a stage at which you 'grow out of it' (I'm not suggesting fantasy is immature, don't worry).

The theory was that people are more inclined to reply to a topic if you ask them a question about themselves, and I think I was right. Just a curiosity of the darwinian cyber-sludge of an internet forum, I guess.

Thanks to those who participated in my masterful mind game.

lol... well you did a good job getting all of us young fantasy authors paranoid anyway. I was a bit worried when I figured out my answers were all 'yes.'

I was a young fantasy author once, and now I'm just a young author of occasional fantasy.

Interesting, if predictable, results.

I'd like to extend the question further (to fantasy writers):

Do you read exclusively fantasy?

How many books per year do you BUY? And what percentage are fantasy?

That's a harsher and perhaps more poignant question. If we include science fiction and the other genres of speculative fiction in the catch-all of "fantasy," then yes, I'm afraid that what fiction I read is almost exclusively fantasy. (Stranger still, I read almost exclusively in English, despite that being my second language.)

Hmmm. I suppose I buy around 40 books of fiction a year, plus/minus depending on the year and not counting graphical novels.

That said, I don't have any plans about becoming a capital-w Writer, except in as much as I enjoy writing as a creative endevour. I already have a profession and it is not the written word (and it probably pays better for less work too), so I'm not too guilty about "nestling up with what I know I like" rather than working at expanding my literary horizons and find new fonts of writing to learn from.

It wasn't meant to be harsh.

Sorry, that was a little imprecise of me. The question wasn't harsh. It's just that its answer is a harsh truth. *g*

Beardedtroll, out of interest, have you read the work of your countrymen? Erik Fosnes Hansen, for example, or Knut Hamsun, if going back a fair bit.

Oh, I read books by Norwegian authors of course (although to my shame I've never read Hamsun, nor am I familiar with Hansen's books.) I must also admit that I haven't seen a play by Ibsen since highschool, I don't know the second verse of our national anthem and I don't like skiing. *hangs head* They're going to come for me, one of these days, I know it.

Oddly enough, I don't read fantasy.

Hehe, and sorry if I sounded rude before, I just wasn't sure if you were doing it out of pure curiosity or not : ). And it sounds like you might just be a future psychologist with that blind study!

Also, what genre would you consider Harry Potter? Or even Lord of the Rings now that it's become even more widely known?

Yes, Yes, Yes/No, Yes

The third selection is still undecided for me as I am not sure how long I can make my novels or if the story I am telling will occupy too much space for one book. I know I could at least fill up 3-4 books with the plot I have alligned and incepted, but my writing technique needs to improve before I can do that.

That would be fantasy. Popularity doesn't define genre.
