Recently while not paying attention to my pastor who was giving his sermon, I flipped through the Bible and the hymnal and found some interesting names.

I, like Oracle above, try to pick names that are easy to read and pronounce, and easy to remember.

Long names, names that sound alike (no matter if there is a logical reason) are something I try to avoid. It might be that in real life names sound alike in one country, but if you notice; names from an unfamiliar country sound similar and are hard to keep apart at first (and in fantasy the setting often is an unfamiliar country). First over time, often years, one starts to get familiar with the names.

Since I doubt (and hope) a reader would not spend this much time reading my story, I focus more on understanding and the story, rather then logic and linguistic realism or whatever to call it ^^

But this is just my style; I am sure in other kind of stories and writing styles can benefit from longer, more complex names and similarities in-between them, but if it does not help the story or you to make your point… nah.

Half There
Close your eyes, spin around, and write the first five things you see.

Duffle bag
Shoes
Ironing Board
Boots
Carpet Machine Plus

Now, phoneticize the first syllable of each word
Du
Shu
Ire
Boots
Car

Now, combine them in a random order
ShuIreBootsCarDu

Now, edit spelling

Shwireboot Kardu

And Voila! you have your fantasy name!
