Think about sound, also. And who is there? And, sometimes telling, what's not there.

What does the space represent, and what objects does it contain that can be symbols for it? What is striking about it? What's the overall atmosphere. Does it smell new and used, or old and abandoned?

Do sounds echo, or fall flat? What is the interplay of color, and shape?

My description tends to be minimal, to highlight only a few elements of an area that are important, to sum it up in a few ideas instead of trying to paint an exact portrait of it.

Imagine, in your mind's eye that you've just walked into this area for the first. Where do your eyes fall, and why?

Good idea huxley for a post. So many times when I describe a room or place I forget certain elements to reveal to the reader. This isn't another question to add but just a suggestion, when a character is noticing different elements of a room try not to give a full dexcription from their pov because many times when we enter a room we don't notice everything right away. I have found that this can make a scene more real. If there is something significant in a room then maybe let the character notice it some time after they are in the room.
