An interesting writing project

I just had an interesting idea and would like to know any suggestions on ways to accomplish this type of writing.

Here then is the idea.

The story is going to be told through journal entries. The dates are going to be sporadic.

I would like to know how much grammar violation I can get away with in something like this, along with punctuation.

Well it depends on what type of character you are writing as. I like the idea, but too much grammar violation could make it a chore to read.

If you must then I would be very careful, because some readers get angry when they see grammar mistakes. So imagine how it would be for that type of person to read an entire story like that.

I'd stick to proper grammar the whole way through. It personally really bothers me when I'm reading a story that's extensively, or entirely, based on journal entries, and there are grammar and spelling mistakes everywhere. I realize that this is how a journal in real life may appear, but if I want to see that I could browse through LiveJournal for a while.

I don't like it when writers try to convey their character's emotions or mental well-being through CRAZY CAPITALS or frantic grammar mistakes. Show your character's state with the way they see the world, the mental images and ideas they conjure up.

It also bugs me when the journal entry is describing something dangerous or frightening that's currently happening to them, things like "I can hear the intruder's footsteps creeping towards my door". They really wouldn't be writing at a time like that, unless you're writing about a deranged live-blogger, I suppose.

Anyway, my basic point is to not rely on lousy grammar to tell the story. This is just how I feel, though. Maybe other readers are more tolerant...

Ooh! Do it like Flowers for Algernon! I absolutely love how his syntax, grammar, punctuation, and spelling change to reflect his waxing and waning intelligence.
