While I totally agree with the general opinion on self-publishing, there are a few legit reasons to do it. My dad has self-published two books, with both printing runs printing about 10k books, and he made a slight profit.

I'd argue that much depends on your motive. My dad hasn't seen a ton of profit but his books have gotten him local acclaim. It really depends on whether you have the time to promote/market and deliver your own book.
