Wizards? Magicians?
Do you have to have a name for magic users and their magic in your story?
If you do how do you find names for them?

shaman, totemic, healer, priest, seer, mage, magician, wizard, sorceror, adept, cleric, oracle, battlemagnus, arcanist, diviner, caster There are many more but there's a short list.

well...if you intend to use mages you're probably going to have to make it good because of the use of mages by great writers, well, it's sorta hard to follow. As irish said, there are lots of them and your best bet would be to go to google and look for whatever sortof thing your looking for...

Also keep in mind the usual meanings of the words. Shaman is usually elemental magic, druid is usually nature magic, wizards are usually old learned men with long beards, etc.

Oh. I have several stories with wizards and none of my characters has a long beard or looks old. |

On the other hand, breaking tradition sometimes is very useful.
Look at Harry Potty--Er, Harry Potter..."Wizard" who won't have a long beard for a long time, is going through school, etc.,
Perhaps slightly altering the context in which the magic-user appears could add a twist?

Forgive me if I'm a bit off topic, but I was always fascinated with the fact that the early Scandinavian wizards' power was derived from singing.
From Encyclopedia Mythica:
"The greatest Finnish wizard was Vainamoinen. Like many other Northern wizards, his power hid in sounds. He invented the harp, and sang magical melodies. Born of air and water, he controlled these elements, as well as the land. His song drove the icy oceans to storms, moved earth, and grew plants. Vainamoinen could sing objects that were not there into being, and make other objects disappear. He once sang an entire forest to the ground so that his people could grow barley."
