I think it's a fine idea. Plus, I haven't read much fiction like this, but the ones that come to mind are Redwall and Narnia, and those take place in another non-Earth fantasy land (if I remember correctly, I might not) while yours is just set in a room in an abandoned house or something, which is cool. If you're going that route it might be cool to have the animals make weapons out of household items, like toothpicks for spears or something. Or they could have set up miniature foundries in a basement or something, it's your call. As long as you're aware that talking fighting animals has been done before and don't go on and on explaining that these animals are actually different in that they can talk and fight and doesn't that just blow everyone's minds it should turn out pretty good.
