magic styles?
Hey!
1: Can anyone give me some unique but "easy" magic systems?
2: I can't figure out the balance in my book (uses magic but wat goes away? whats the downfall of using magic?) and can't figure out how i'm going to put it in like how does he control it? like with his mind (can't do, its kind of a clich.) lol thankss!!
I was thinking about like "magic missles" but ppl are saying its a clich so does anyone have some awsome magic systems (not moves or attacks) but like styles lol sorry if i'm not making sense.
Thanks!!!!

Use your imagination! Do you want the magic to be used by everyone or can only skilled wizards use it? Does it involve nature, or forces of nature, or willpower?

You will have to devise the limits on magic; maybe it is exhausting for wizards to use; or its efficacy depends on weather; or the only impressive spells worth knowing are extremely difficult to learn or obtain; or only a certain race can use magic; there is so much you can do. You must be creative.

I dunno what "magic missles" are; I've never heard of it, so it must not be too cliched, yeah?

I agree with galt. There are no limits to how you can develope the magic system as long as it makes sense and the rules are not constantly broken because you like to throw in surprises or twists at the reader. Look at what others have done and either get inspiriation or develope a system that is almost opposite.

Hmmm, well I've read a lot of fantasy series that involve magic. I've seen all powerful mages that drain their energy to the point of exhaustion, and I've seen others that require elements to create their magic (more like an alchemist but without potions). Then there was always the divine help prayer for special occasions.
I've been toying with the idea of magic being a physical manifestion of the emotions of the caster. Uncontrollable, draining, unpredictable. I've also seen some books call telekinesis magic and never delve into the actual elemental properties of it.
There's a lot of things you can do with it. However whatever you create, stick to your own rules and it'll be fine.

So then maybe the magic instead of draining the one who is using it becomes over driven with energy to the point where they can't control it. That way the caster must be able to maintain and control the magic before it overcomes him. There's something right there that someone could expand on.

Just keep working on it. I have found that in Fantasy it's a genre that has a lot of cliches and it can be hard at first when writing to come up with your own unique elements but if you do come up with something original use it to your full advantage. I would also suggest that even if you come up with something that you have heard or read before don't worry about it too much. Just write. As you write you could stray away from that cliche and mold it into something new. I have elements of Tolkien and Jordan in my own story but I do not worry about it because I feel my overall story and the characters in it are unique and that will be what attracts the reader.

Well said Kimahri. There's also something to be said for using a cliche system. If your throwing something completely new at them, coupled with storyline and characters, some readers might be overwhelmed.
*light bulb*
This also brings to mind something I've heard thrown around here. "If it doesn't play a vital role, the detail is just not needed." So, unless the magic system influences the story, a simple and cliche version might be the best option. Anyways, good luck.

druism = nature magic. wears wolf-woven clothing.
necromancer = undead/poison magic. carries ivory dagger/skull.
wizard = magic of energy/thought. they require wand/staff most times.
dont know what else?

Well, I'm not really experienced in magic... But I think " blademasterzzz" was really rude. I understood you... I think LOL Well anyway to say that anyone "shouldn't write" for ANY reason is just stupid.

I don't know, but for me, I only like magic in a story when it's rare and uncommon. I mean, it wouldn't be so cool if everyone ran around casting fireballs and riding broomsticks(no, I'm not refering to Harry Potter, ) But perhaps if there were only a select few who can perform magic, it would give the reader the feeling that they are uniquely unique.
As for ideas about magic systems, I dunno. I'm not good with stuff like magic and the like. But maybe stuff like artifacts with hidden magical energies wouldn't be that bad. I don't know. It would probably take lots of thinking to brew up a completely NEW, uncliche magic system, which I probably can't think of.

haha in my story only specific ppl can use and control magic, so it won't be harry potter type (no offense, i actually like harry potter). ya so i'll probbaly just use something like dungeons and dragons.
thanks
