Why don't you try your hand at making some up?
"Booga booga a'shooga!" shouted Alex, pointing palm-out at the giant rat. A stream of white light blinded the rat, sending it staggering, and illuminated the cave.
I just wrote that off the top of my head. Depending on the style of magic you use, you can do something informal like that, or look up Dungeons and Dragons type spells. I know that some books have used that style. (Magic missiles, etc.) I personally don't like it or feel it's creative enough, but then again, that's just me.
Also there are a lot of "styles" out there that you ought to take the time to compare, especially if you're writing magical fantasy.
Take for example:
Robert Jordan's saidar/saidin system with the Aes Sedai - rather formal system that utilizes rules.
George R.R. Martin's cryptic, myserious magic system that doesn't seem to have set rules.
Anne McCaffery's "magic" which is science-based and revolves around dragons with set rules.
The Dragonlance Chronicles with fairly rigid D&D-based spells.
You should examine your story and choose a system that best fits it.

I agree with the "make it up yourself" idea. I mean, the appeal of fantasy (at least, I'm assuming it's fantasy) is that it's allows you to escape normality, and gives you freedom to do whatever you want.. so why fence yourself in with pre-designed ideas?
I say, just go wild with it, and see what you get.

Some of the things I like to do is take basic elemental attacks such as earth, water, wind, lightning, etc and use them in unique ways. One of my favorite attacks takes the earth below a person and either turns it into steel or stone spikes that shoot up and impale anyone standing in the way.
The defense to that is either a magic shield, or as one of my antagonists did during one battle, he turned the ground under him to granit and road the spikes like surfing a wave.
There are definately traditional magic skills, but what makes magic all that much more fun is when you come up with a unique way to use it.

Well, I'm still working out a lot of my different battle magics, so I haven't got much to throw at you right now. I should soon enough though once I get back in and start working on my Griffin's Pride novel.

some research could prove to be helpful for you =D it's what I do whenever I'm stuck lol
if you play video games you could mix and match and make up your own; I agree with what others have to say
How about,
Wall of water (ok that sounds lame) but Like, a wall of water to deflect the attack
or
Energy drain (once again bad name) it's like, this spell drains the energy directly from the attack/attacker? O_O
Ok never mind, my mind is kind of mushed up, can't think of any good ones,
really it's your story =p so go crazy with it
Wish you luck~

IF your mage is powerful enough, and with enough of a dark side to them, (without being totally evil) you could give them a few necromancing spells where they call forth the dead and ghosts to be their weapons. Depending on what you want, it could provide a good offensive attack, and kinda creap out your reader a bit at the same time.

I can't figure out the balance in my book (uses magic but wat goes away? whats the downfall of using magic?) and can't figure out how i'm going to put it in like how does he control it? like with his mind (can't do, its kind of a clich.) lol thankss!!

One magic system I came up with for another book actually isn't magic. It's technology based magic. IE, technology that behaves like magic and is magic to all but the most educated. Search the forums for my experimental short story called "The digimage" and you'll see one example of that in use.
