Exclamation Choosing a font for manuscript submission- It's killing me!

I have searched the forum for posts on this but still have a few questions.

I finally decided Courier and I assume that the '12' that I want is the '12' in the font box (not this other '10' in an inch thing I keep reading about...)

It looks giant, when printed. Thats why I ask. Also, my quotation marks show up as black blocks. Is this normal?

I would love to switch to TNRoman but averaging out the advise given here, it seems as if Courier is the better choice- if no specific is requested?

Appreciate any input.

Shauna

paragraphs....

No spaces between paragraphs and first line indented, as a rule, right?

There is a courier dark that can be downloaded (google) and installed on Windows machines, but I don't know if it's supported for XP, but it is OK for ME, 98, 95. (It also says Windows 2000 and Windows NT, but I don't know if these are the same as XP.)

I've heard both TNR and Courier are used. Those who use TNR say they've never had trouble. But the thing is, some places stipulate Courier as it's a -- and I forget what it's called, it could be monotype -- that has evenly spaced type so that page usage is easier to estimate. On the other hand, the darker TNR is easier to read. I'd go with TNR myself unless something else is specified in the guidelines. And you should probably never submit unless you've read the guidelines.

re: And you should probably never submit unless you've read the guidelines.

Its actually not for submission but for 2 upcoming sessions at the Surrey Writers Conference. I get a 15 minute sit down with an editor where they read and critique 10 pages. 10 minutes to pitch an editor who may or may not choose to read my work.

Thats why I cannot find specifics. The websites for these two women do not cover font. Just basic submission requirements.

I'll go with NTroman.

Possible to get a confirmation on no spaces between paragraphs? And first line indent?

Thanks alot,

Shauna

Talia_Brie is an unknown quantity at this point
Times New Roman, 12 pt. No line breaks between paragraphs, first line indent, but double space the lines. In general they'll want 1 inch margins all the way around.

It may appear huge whne you print it out, with lots of blank space, but the editor is going to need it to be easy to read, and there is going to need to be space for him/her to write on it.

It also means you won't get as much actual content to the editor, so that makes your selection very important.

Send a message via MSN to mammamaia
the looking 'giant' may just be the result of you having your viewing size set above 100%... check it, to see if that's the problem... while times new roman is ok, courier is easier for editors/anyone to read... if you email me, i'll be glad to send you a ms format guide...

love and hugs, maia
