I might use a "heh", but don't use "ha ha" or anything like it. I prefer to just describe the laughing and let the reader imagine it.

I'd recommend trying to think laterally about trying to describe the laugh rather than looking for other, less common words for the same thing. Be specific but only if it is required. Ask yourself if it really matters how the person is laughing?

He laughed, without laughing...
