Modesty is better than confidence in those who lack skill or intelligence. You talk real fucking big, Ilyak, but you're actually pretty fucking small. I prefer people who talk small but have something decent to say. From the looks of her few posts, this newjack is one such person, and a good addition to the forum. You, as I have said many times, are not, but could be, so long as you were willing to learn from others and tone down your ego.

What makes you think I don't have confidence in my writing?

What you're trying to figure out -- if I'm understanding correctly -- really depends on who your lead character is.

A "through line" is simply the spine of your story. And the spine of ANY story rests on one thing: WHAT DOES THE MAIN CHARACTER WANT?

So who is your main character? Is he with the cult from its beginnings or does he enter when it's already at full bloom? What is his problem and how will he solve it? How long will it take him? How important is the "history" of the cult to him reaching his goal? Is it merely background material or is it crucial to his success or failure?

None of these questions can be answered until you know WHAT your main character wants. And it has to be a specific physical goal. You can also couple this with a specific emotional goal, but the key word is specific.
