When I'm trying to write and I'm tense and/or moody, U2 or Cat Power immediately relaxes me and my mood.

I think up really good story lines when I'm chin deep in the bath tub.

My dreams are a great inspiration to many of my stories.

Other times I come off with a great piece completely on the spot. (like pulling up the 'submit new thread' box and completely winging it)

^ Cat Power is lovely. Maybe I'll try writing to Moon Pix sometime.

Since I started my 'write at least 250 wpd' experiment five or six days ago, I came up with a 3.4k story. I should really do this more often. To others considering the idea, I heartily recommend it. I just started with a first line I had hanging around since summer, and did my best to turn off the internal critic just for as long as it took to bang out 250+ words.

That's an interesting idea. I usually sit back and wait on the inspiration to strike me, but I never thought of 'pounding' it out by a setting a quota. I just might try this!

I like to write to music. I like to write in silence. I like to write with the TV on. It all depends on whatever mood I'm in.

Seems like if I wash dishes sometimes inspiration will come. I think my muse likes to make me take the yellow gloves off and scribble things down. Sometimes I can't get through one sinkful of dishes without stopping over and over with ideas. This works if I'm stuck, sometimes, too...hooray for menial tasks, I guess.

I write at my best when I've got a blank wall in front of me. I stare at it, let my eyes go out of focus, and I can see what the character I'm writing about is seeing. I used to write in an upstairs room, with a view that over looked the Pacific Ocean. It didn't help me though, unless I was writing a scene that involved a person looking out to sea (and I haven't written many of those). Now I'm down in a basement room, which my partner lovingly refers to as 'the pit'.

You must need to redecorate a lot.

I do that aswell.. Sometimes it's even just sentences, which I rewrite like five/ten times. I'm weird like that..

Music does it for me. My ideas come to me very often when I am listening to music, because it gets me in different mood depending on what kind of music I listen to

It really helps me to write while drinking coffee, or talking with a friend on the phone.....Kinda weird, but too bad. Also, I can't seem to write well unless I'm in my darkest clothing, dunno why, but it seems to help, lol.

Music is key for me. I listen to whatever seems to fit with the "mood" of what I'm writing. While writing my newest story, Protecting Me, I listen to a lot of Avril Lavigne.

The other thing I must have is darkness. So basically I only write at night. I think it's because I can block out everything else.

Lastly, (is that a word?) I try to get into the mindset of my character, and try to feel what he or she is feeling.

So pastels don't work for you?

Sorry, I'm not making fun, I'm just wondering how you came to this conclusion.

Same with me. I try to think like my character; how he/she would talk, act, think. Sometimes I scare myself, since right now I'm working on a serial killer piece.
