My advice to ANYONE who wants to write, regardless of age:

1. Read. Read. Read.

2. AIC.*

I agree completely. If you're serious about writing, act like it. Uninstall all the games from your computer. Cancel your cable. Get a fat stack of books and put them where you read the most (not in bed, trust me, reading in bed messes with sleeping). Then grab a notebook, your favorite pen, and a comfortable chair and start writing. Write for at least two hours whether you feel like it or not.

Writing isn't like watching a movie. It isn't easy. Sometimes you'll look at the clock and realize you've written two decent sentances in two hours. You will get frustrated. Find some way to keep yourself motivated. I have a sign hanging at eye level next to my desk that says the same thing my signature does. Reading it helps me through the times when writing is the last thing I want to do after a tough day at class/work. If you want to get anything done, you have to work at it.

AIC.

Using excessive adjectives and ten dollar words is good writing in the same way mastubation is sex. You may enjoy it, but no one has any clue what you're so excited about.

Uh, no, they probably wouldn't be able to relate.
So how come so many people who have never experienced such things first-hand can write books about them fine?

Appealing to universal empathy.

also, I don't really agree with FORCING yourself to write. You probably won't write anything of merit anyway.
