Flashback mode

what do you think of flashbacks in stories? do you think its a good way of revealing the past of a charicter or not?

what do you think makes a good flashback?

Like most things, good flash backs are good, bad ones are bad. Sounds basic and retundant but it's the truth.

What makes a good flashback is a much more complex question. I'm not sure how to answer that. Some things that make a bad flashbacks. Don't have them brought on via dreams, visions or hard blows to the head. It's been done too many times and too few times well. Also, don't let the flashbacks overwhelm things that are going on currently.

I'm sure there's plenty of other tips I should give but I can't think of them now.

i was thinking about doing a flashback... though not in a dream or anything just basically the start of a chapter i was gouing to start in flashback, however im worried it will confuse the reader so its hard to do.

do you think i should do a flashback or just a good description of an event which is important in the story?
