Where do you write?

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this.

Anyways, I usually would lay on my bed (my typical reading position), my laptop on my lap and just start typing. But today, I decided to try something new, went into the study, sat down in a nice comfortable chair, placed the laptop on the desk and went from there. I must say, I don't know whether it was the new environment or some spark of genius, but I seemed to be writing much more comfortably and better!

I am gonna go with the former and say it was the new environment. I am just amazed at how much of a difference it made. Nice cool room, comfortable, and it just kept me focused.

Just wondering what sort of places you all write in? What do you find works for you?

Depends what I am writing. I like writing poetry at the beach, technical stuff in my living room, romantic stuff in bed and you in the bathroom (just kidding).

Mostly in my room, but sometimes in the car on long trips. I agree, sometimes a change of scenery can spark something new.
Peace and quiet are all I really require, so any place I can hide away for a little bit.

I don't have a laptop, so I'm chained to the desk.

I don't even have a study at the moment, so I've put my desk in our family room.

But we're building a new house, and I'm getting my study back. Yay.

Haha... I would write something witty to hit you back with, but, nothing seems to be coming to mind. Maybe, cause I'm laying on my bed...

Destany: I agree, peace and quiet are top priorities for me as well. Without that, I am getting nowhere. I use to write outdoors quite a bit but there were constant distractions and it just proved to be more of a hassle then anything. If I can manage to find myself a nice secluded spot, then that will most certainly do.

With regards to writing in the car, that definitly wouldn't work for me. I never get sea sick or air sick, but I do get motion sickness from time to time in a car. I am betting that writing will be more than enough to launch that ship. I know reading does, which gets me so upset, because you can get so much done on some of those long trips.

Well, today I was writing cross-legged on my bed, laptop in front of me, surrounded by crap, listening to Pulp.

I go between that and being in the study, writing on the main desktop computer.

I mainly write at home, at my desk but sometimes I write in a coffee shop (I know, how cliched, right?).

I wrote a good portion of my novel in a Turkish coffee shop here in NYC during my morning breaks at work. It was a calm place, good strong coffee, and lots and lots of Jazz coming over the sound system. (The only distraction I ever had was when this young lawyer used to come in and sit with me to always bother me about what I was doing---not out of curiosity, mind you, but with that smug reassurance that he was better than me and what I was doing was silly. He would always look over my shoulder with this smirk on his face. If I have any luck of ever getting this novel published, I would have the satisfaction of knowing that, in a very very small and limited way, that I had incorporated him into the novel!)

But generally, I write at home, at my desk. Sometimes there's a lot of distractions when writing outside the home. But you can find places outside the home to write where people won't bother you. I don't mind people coming up to me asking what I am doing, but sometimes you get those who just want to mock you for whatever reason, as if you are doing something crazy. In NYC a man sitting at a table quietly writing is something crazy to some people; not the maniac whose ranting and raving on the street outside the window! Go figure.

Anywhere really. Outside, in my room, in the car...or very far...okay I'm turning into Dr. Susse. But you get the point.

But I don't have a laptop, so I've gotta do it the old fashioned way. Pen and paper, once it's been perfected then re-typed all the way through on the computer. Ah...being 13 anf living with two computer game-obbsessed brothers is great for my writing (anyone catch the sarcasm there?)

I write pretty much wherever I can find the most comfortable spot, given the circumstances. Most of the time I start out writing at my desk in my room (on an ancient fold-up metal chair) and then my back starts hurting, which prompts me to move to my bed. I do enjoy a comfortable chair, though they are hard to come by...

Since I spend almost my entire day on campus, I tend to write in the computer labs. I try to pump out a paragraph or two of fun writing while I'm hammering out code for a homework assignment. Whn I write for the paper, I write in our office. I try to avoid it though since we only have Macs and I'm a programmer first, writer second.

Most of my writing is either done on my computer in the study or sat somewhere in the house with a pen and paper. I'm going to be spending a week on a canal boat with my family soon, so I'm bound to get a lot of writing done there. Can't wait!

I can't stand writing on a computer. Even stories. Even lengthy stories. The only things I can get away with on the computer are essays--creative writing comes out too technical.

That said, I usually write in my room. If I'm away from home, I'll try to find a spot where I can watch people without them watching me (i.e. balcony, dark corner). Always with a notebook, always with a pencil. Can't write with a pen either, everything in ink comes out forced. Maybe I'm just odd.

I've written several poems recently while watching a sunset in the Rocky Mountians (I had the privilige of traveling there this summer). Simply religious. I don't know if it made me write any better, but it was surely more enjoyable.

Lately I've been writing at my computer. I'm not a big fan of typing my work...but right now I'm in a class and my prof and I are trying it via the net so it has to be online. But yeah...I much prefer sitting at my comfy desk and going crazy in a journal or notebook. Rarely does my mind really spark when I'm writing online. I feel there's something more personal about hand to paper. <3

I can understand that Achilles. There is a part of me that would really enjoy doing all my writing on paper, though I feel I would grow tired of it, and eventually stop writing, maybe not because I obtained writers block or lost interest, but because my hand hurt.

Hopefully though I will not be completely glued to this technology and will do some real writing from time to time.

Typewriters! That's awesome! I think that would be a ton of fun, hm... maybe I'll have to pick one up...
