Writing Erotica?
I was just thinking about writing erotic fiction for fun and maybe profit.
Can anyone recommend good resources or give advice?

Get a girlfriend and a copy of a particular Indian manual. Not you, Sap.

This might be something you'd be interested in. damien_frosst (here at WF) knows one of their authors, so I'd recommend PMing him. He might be able to give you more information.
Neener, Damien. I thought you could use the extra work

Val, you know that I don't mind helping.

But for erotica you need a girlfriend as well, surely?

Mike: This is erotica, not Penthouse Forums.

***completely unrelated to either Sap or Hand's posts on this thread***
BWF, I will freely admit I've got some erotica on my shelves and no, Sap. I've read some, hmm, beautiful ones and then goddamned awful one liners that are commonly based on '... and they fucked.'
Point is, make it tasteful. Include candles and stuff if you want, not sure how many people will see that particular erotica as realistic, but that's what some seems to be about... make it something people will want to read for more than the purpose of getting themselves off, and something people won't say 'oh, another sex scene' and skip over it.

I haven't really read much erotica, if any. But I did read a book called "Belinda", one of Anne Rice's earlier works. I don't remember it being very graphic, it's been a while since I've read it. But I think what I find most "erotic" in writing is the tension leading up to the deed. The actual reading of the sex scene is less fun for me than the tease of wondering when/if two good characters are going to hook up.

I haven't read much erotica, and I've stayed away from Rice's erotic works out of fear that it might make me see her other works differently... Maybe I'll give that a read though.
I'm interested in this thread because I do have a scene later in my book that the characters 'hook up', but at this point, I've thought of just the lead up, let the readers can imagine what they will, then boom, skip to the scene where their cuddling in bed. But in some ways, I feel that would leave the reader feeling cheated, but it's tricky to write a sex scene and not make the reader blush or roll their eyes. One bit of advice I've seen over and over in regards to erotic writing is to keep the terminology simple and commonplace. Cheeky slang tends to get laughed at, pornographic terms can make the reader uncomfortable, and scientific or medical terms get an eye roll... Some of the best scenes I've read describe what's going on besides "he did this, she blanked on that, he stuck it in and then they..."
When it comes to erotica though, I expect everyone has their own peferences as to how far it should be taken.

I read that one. I wouldn't call it erotica... not in a physical sort of sense, anyway. I felt it was more emotional, if that makes sense.
I did read one horror gothy sort of erotica called Sips of Blood. I forget who wrote it, but it was good. You gotta have a taste for that kinda stuff though.
So yeah, I'd reccomend reading erotica first. Try to find the type that you would like to write...
I'd love to write it myself, so anything else posted here would be helpful.

i'd love to see someone do something really new with erotica. I never really get past a few pages because it's dull. Is it possible to write a convincing storyline to an erotica....or does that stop it being erotica?

I don't fully understand "erotica" as a genre of writing. I mean what is the purpose? Is it to get a person off? Or is there something else?
I agree with those stated before...the events leading up to the deed are more "erotic" than actually reading about the deed...it also allows one to avoid the tricky situation of what to call what, and all that. Who wants to read " his manhood, her womanhood"?
But like they said before stating the technical term can be callous *sp*, and boring, more colorful names can be embarassing.
If I were to write a sex scene in a novel I would try to make it feel as natural as if I were the one in the scene...so I would have people speak, act, breathe as a regular human would...so if I were to use a common phrase or slang word, I would include that, providing it fit into my character's profile. As of yet though I haven't had to cover that topic in writing.

Skipping a sex scene in erotica? Isn't that like skipping all the gunplay in a Matthew Reilly book?
