How to submit to magazines???

I write sci-fi.

Just short stories at this point. I want to submit to magazines. I see all the info on sites like Analog and Sci fi & fantasy that tell how to submit.. but they don't mention what info to put on the cover letter.

What I need to know is what to put on the cover letter????

What information do I need... besides my name and address.. the name of the story, and the word count.

Should I say something about myself? (especially since I have never been published before)

Should it be formatted like a letter?

Exactly what other info should I include?

Anyone here ever been published by these mags?

Try TeenInk.com. You can send in your submissions over the net, i find it easier that way.

There is a great book by the editors of Asimov's. It's a bit dated as it talkes about typewrites (writen in 1981) but still full of wonderful advice. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...02416?v=glance

They mention in this book that for short stories one doesn't really need to have a cover letter for a short story.

Also, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America website may have some good resources, though it's been awhile since I've read through the page so I can't be sure. Here's the link: http://www.sfwa.org/

i help lots of my mentees with cover letters, as well as their works, so if you want some one-on-one help in this area, just drop me a line...

the most important thing is to check each publication's submission guidelines... that will often give you info on what to include in your query/cover letter...

love and hugs, maia
