Hand: I like how the titles represent something form your novel, but is it a ket factor?

What I mean is, is the 'Solar Virus' or 'Brain Slug' an integral part of the story?

Thanks!

Geez. I watch far too much Buffy.

But anyway, I agree with you. Candace is a nice name, and fitting for my character, but I don't want it really in the title.

Zinta: I'll definitely have to try that. I may have to write a paragraph and then whittle it down first : ).

Thanks!!

"Prophecy Girl" doesn't sound too bad.
And you can -never- watch too much Buffy.

Dang straight! Buffy rules!

I just wish I had Joss Whedon's mind... he is seriously one fo the most creative people I know of.

And I kind of like prophecy girl, but I'm still tinkering.

Grr.. titleing is so difficult!

Rebel: Yes.

I'd watch out with the title "Prophecy Girl". It's cute, yes, but unless your aiming for a young adult/teenager market, I'd suggest something else.

Ouch... PLEASE don't pick prophecy girl.

If I saw a book called Prophecy Girl sitting in the bookstore, I would only pick it up so that I could make fun of the entire synopsis. Then, if the synopsis allowed me to enforce the cheezy "Prophecy Girl" cliché, then I would open it up to random passages, and make fun of those too.

No serious fantasy reader will take your book seriously if it is called Prophecy Girl.

Wow, I sounded harsh, didn't I? Just don't call it prophecy girl, for the love of all things written. But, if it's aimed toward 12-year-old readers who aren't die-hard for fantasy, then I could see them picking it up.

Actually, just Prophecy sounds alot better. I'd probably pick up and flip through a book called Prophecy if I found it at the library.

Any word placed next to Prophecy will make it sound cliché.

BUT, if it's just Prophecy then it's like saying, "toss all those prophecy story clichés out the window! THIS is the REAL Prophecy!"

That's the effect it has on me at least.

Orcale, I agree with what you said completely.

I like Prophecy, but it sounds really unoriginal.

I'm just worried that it would come across as forgettable.

I really like Destany's idea of putting Ammon-Eshe in the title, but I'm not sure how to effectively combine the two.

If I say something like, The Chronicles of Ammon-Eshe: Prophecy, then it sounds wayyyy too C.S. Lewis.

I was thinking of using ammon-eshe as part of the series title... any thought?

The Ammon-Eshe Prophecy sounds like a subtitle to me. I know it doesn't really help with the titling of the current book but it sounds like either the name of the series or the subtitle for the first book (like Fellowship of the Ring).

so __________: The Ammon-Eshe Prophecy, perhaps? Don't know how to fill the gap though.

How 'bout just calling it "The Rebel Goddess?"
Or "Prophecy Quest"

Usually, I think of the title before all else and create a story to go with it.

I'll admit, I'm struggling for inspiration for the title of my newest project. I've got two sort of codenames I use until I can think of something better. I'll share them, in case they provide any sudden inspiration.

1) Paladin's Mess - The story largely follows this moronic paladin. Paladin's Mess is a small reference in the story, fairly early on, about a region he accidentally devastated. It's a very minor reference, but I thought it was quite fitting.

2) The Planes of Parody - This came from my EverQuest days. I wrote a series of stories set around The Planes of Power expansion pack (but they weren't reliant on a knowledge of it for humour -- I've always maintained that a parody is no good unless it's still funny with no knowledge of what's being parodied). These stories had the same central two characters, and are kind of the story's roots -- but the premise is obviously no longer anything to do with the Planes of Power -- but I might keep this title anyway. It's got a nice ring.

Some stylistic notes on titles:

Think of the effect that "The" creates in titles -- a sort of grandoise, almost formal effect. Think of some titles that include "The" -- they often wouldn't of worked anything like as well without it.

Likewise, I couldn't see George Orwell titling a book "The Animal Farm" or "The Year 1984" either. That's something to think about.

If it's a noun you're using for your title, try and make it something slightly specific. "Paladin's Mess" for example: it might be a minor reference, but it's very specific, and it fits well with the characters. What you think of when you hear it is very fitting.

Another thing that "The" can do is to give some significance to something, almost make it intrigueing. It's interesting that there are so many phrases and little images writers come up with that I like, yet so few in titles. They're just hard.

If you're going with "Prophecy" might I suggest something like:

"The Prophet's Calling" - depending on story something like "The Tenth Prophet" might work? Along the portal theme: "The ____ Bridge" perhaps? "The MoonLight Bridge", "A Bridge To Nowhere".

Combine the two maybe: "The Prohpet's _____" Doorway/Calling/Journey/Scroll. The Prohet's Calling sounds OK.

Ammon-Eshe itself could make a good title -- or at least a series title.

"Ammon-Eshe: The Prophet's Call" or "The Prophet's Call: Eternity Nowhere" sound good (heh -- I liked that little title).

Kintaris: It does sound kind of like it would only be 1/2 the title. I'm probably going to split it up though, so as to not use 2 of my titleing possibilities in one.

Xion Knight: hehe! What a fun idea! A nice little easter egg that only my close friends and I would understand. lol.

Anidazen: I really like your ideas. After reviewing them all I'm pretty sure I'm going to have the series title include Ammon-Eshe and have this specific book title include prophecy.

Right now I'm liking the whole idea of :

The Ammon-Eshe ___ (insert synonym or something similar to chrinicles): The Prophecy

And maybe I could drop the "The" from the title.

It could be a thing where all the books (the 2 or 3 from the series) would have one word titles.

Examples (irrelevant, random words):

(The) Glove
(The) Tree

Etc...

Gosh... who'd have thought that when the writing comes so easily the titles take forever....

Damn irony! Hehe

Glove and Tree are too mundane IMO even with "the" adding some significance.

"The ____ Incident" could work.

Eg. "Amon-Eshe: The Scarlet Incident", "Amon-Eshe: The Sunset Princess".

You don't have to do series title colon subtitle... You could do like:

"Sunrise Over Amon-Eshe".

Lemme know if there's anything there you like.
