Having trouble naming characters...

Hey everyone! Well, since it's summner and everything, I've decided to be productive and start a long term writing project since I never finish them. So this time I'm being very careful, thinking everything out, and I'm having trouble choosing a name for my main character.

I guess you should know some stuff about her: She's 17 y.o, a very devout Christian, blonde hair, green eyes. I've come up with these names so far--

Christine
Hannah
Julia
Violet
Elizabeth
Victoria
Celeste

I would really appreciate any further suggestions and comments. Thanks everybody!

I really don't have any new names off hand - if you need more, I can dig out the list of names I have somewhere in a writing folder of mine - and type them up. Of the ones you brought up, I suggest Celeste? It's an uncommon name, from what I've seen, and sounds pretty on top of that.

Yes, Celeste has always been a favorite name of mine. I wouldn't want to be a bother, so you don't have to type up the names list. Thanks for offering, though. I'll go to the phone book Always a great place for names!

Yeah, I like Celeste. It stands out and it's not obviously Christian unlike, say, Mary.

I used the name Mary, for a virginal/Christian/Goody-two-shoes style character. She was a minor role but it worked well. Mocked the choice of name, so it depends on the style.

Peronaly I don't like the name Celeste, but it fits your character. It's unusual enough to be remembered easily, but not a ridiculously uncommon name.

I find my book collection, and other people's and video collections grea places for names. Just glancing at them and remembering a character, and thinking "yep John fits into Character X's profile."

Good Luck, I hate picking names.

Hi Guys.

i find if you type "christian names" into a search engine it will bring up thousands of results, for girls and boys.

this is a fantastic website that draws up names from the US Census. You can gauge the normality of the random results using the 'obscurity factor' button. Useful for absoultely anyone who's fed up of writing about John and Jane.

I have a visual picture in my head when it comes to names. Certain names relay certain types of personalities and traits about a person to me right from the word go. So say for example, someone with the name "Bob" will give me a different mental picture of the person's nature and personality than "Edward" would long before I've met them or seen them. I'm rarely wrong on those mental visualizations, so when naming a charecter I usually go for what name in my mind best fits the type of personality I'm striving for in the charecter. Same reason I picked the name "Mike" when naming a charecter in a recent work I just put aside yesterday. (got some wicked writers block, so I'm shelving it for a while till I can figure out what I did wrong and fix it to move the story ahead) Another charecter in there named "Pav" goes along with the charecters younger and more immature nature being that he's the youngest of the group. His charecter also very closely matches numerous traits I've observed from another gentleman I know named Pav. Hence the corilation of names. Sometimes if I can't think of a good name to give them, or one that matches their personality, or if for example I haven't gone far enough to develop or choose a personality for them, I'll pick names from my environment. At least two of my charecters in that book are named after co-workers using jumbles of their names to come up with the final names for each charecter.

I sometimes drop in hints in their names. Like Cristine, for example. Cristine derives from the word "Christ" meaning that this person is somewhat "Christ-like." Same with the name Christian.

My opinion from what has been mentioned, I like Cristine (duh) or Celeste. For a suggestion, how about Charly? I guess I just like those 'C' names.

That site from above is pretty sweet too. Thanx! Although it doesn't do so well for sci-fi/fantasy names.

And, oh yeah, definitely Todd. So fine

When naming a character, unless it's a nickname or pseudonym, the parents' qualities are more important than the character's...
