I find it helpful if my character's name has an appropriate meaning to it....so I'm a big fan of baby-name books!!

LW: don't pick something too predicatible. I do like Celeste--it could work for both goody-two shoes or femme fatale.

Well, if the parents are strongly religious, they may name the child a hebrew name like Adam. (my parents are christian and my name is Adam )
So go to www.babynames.com and look at hebrew names for girls.
( list of hebrew names :http://www.babynames.com/Names/Search/search_adv2.php )

OOPS! I Didn't notice somebody else already said to go to that site, sorry!

I also am a big fan of www.babynames.com, it's how I named a lot of my characters. You can do a search for meanings of names, which is really, really helpful.

And this site is my big "secret" behind all of the made up names in my writing.

http://www.kleimo.com/random/name.cfm

This site genorates up to 30 random names at a time and you can choose what gender and the range of obscurity.

It's a really big help, especially if you're looking for something unique. I tend to alter endings and beginnings of names, but it's a preference.

Enjoy!

Racheal

For your girly, I'd have to say Faith. Strikes me as a holy-aurora type of name

One thing I like to do when coming up with fantasy-type names is making a list of all the letters I haven't used in names yet and try to make a decent name out of those, and so on. That way it's easier for readers to recognize who is who because all the names sound and look different.

Look at vehicle names and alter them slightly. Take the Ford Kar for example. To save being sued add an "r" at the end. Or even look at the back of deoderant cans, some have the contents in a different language, pick a short and easily memorable word from their.

Even had a character called Gelis. Inspired? Not really, I was listening to VANgelis at the time

The name game

I wrote a book and each name I created or came up with was based solely on the character. FOr instance, I have a character named Charlie, which is a pretty unimposing name, but then so is my character. I chose this name because I was making the subtle point that you should never judge a book by its cover. My Charlie is someone who will develop over time into a strong character, which will make the others say, "Charlie did what?!"

Think about your character(s) and decide what their weak and strong points are are play on those with the names you choose. This gives the book more depth and makes them more interesting to the reader once they see what you are trying to say through your character's names.

My suggestions are:
Faith
Joy
Liberty-Libby or Lib for short
Ruth/Ruthie
Beth (or Elizabeth with Beth or Lisa for short?)
