Prompts

Aside from the section on this forum, does anyone know of a good place for writing challenges, like prompts and first lines and suchlike? It takes a lot to rev up my brain for writing. All I can find are quaint fifth-grader prompts like, "If you had a superpower, what would it be?"

Any ideas?

---

Add-on: I'm not particularly keen on the personally based prompts, either. Fiction's my focus.

A mechanic works late one evening, he has to go out hte back fire exit because the front was locked- He rounds thecorner and something catches his eye. It looks like a finger- a finger dangling over the edge of a dumpster- upon further investigation, he sees that it is his wife. He drops to the ground and thinks. Wracks his brain. These blackouts he's been having lately hurt his brain. Sure, they'd been fighting lately. Sure, some fights got somewhat violent. Had anyone seen them fighting? So what? All couples fight, right? Was he at work all day? He was sure he was, but couldn't remember. Scenes flash through his mind. A screen, a shadow, was that a knife? Something glinted in the light in his mind. He runs bvack to the fire exit thinking all he has to do is check his timecard. Door is locked. His breath catches in his throat- did he even punch in today?

Go ye and write

Heh. Thank you!

(By the way - Should you worry when a story written in a male persona is interpreted as a female by someone who reads it? This just happened to me.)

First up, One of Writingforums' sister sites, www.WritersUnbound.com has quite a lot of the sort of thing you're looking for. Its got plenty of other stuff too, but hopefully you'll find something to get you inspired.

Or, if that doesn't work, you could try the automatic writing challenge program I wrote. I've mentioned it here a few times before, but here's the link again: Spudley's Writing Challenge Generator.

Hope they help.

Check out Seventh Sanctum. They have a load of different generators. Some are specifically writing prompts and the like.

Heh. Nazareth - It's easier to be unisex when you're writing in first person, which I was. Damn, maybe my characters need therapy.

I don't know. It's the 1st of January already, by a couple of hours, and I should be resolving things, and I just want to make a reasonable volume of good stuff just to hone my skills. If anyone has any advice on what just gets the creative juices flowing do tell...
