Are you writing a short story or a novel?
If you're writing a novel, I reccommend some sort of outline and a sense of where you want the story to go. For me, doing outlines helps prevents writer's block and allows structure and fluidity throughout the narrative.
I also suggest a brief outline for a short story too, but that's probably less necessary.
It depends what works for you. Different strokes for different folks.
Good luck with your writing.
