My story

Ok, I have a detailed beginning to my story I want to write. But I don't know exactly where to go from there. Should I be outlining the whole story before I type it, or should I outline major future parts as I type it?

Are you writing a short story or a novel?

If you're writing a novel, I reccommend some sort of outline and a sense of where you want the story to go. For me, doing outlines helps prevents writer's block and allows structure and fluidity throughout the narrative.

I also suggest a brief outline for a short story too, but that's probably less necessary.

It depends what works for you. Different strokes for different folks.

Good luck with your writing.

Talia_Brie is an unknown quantity at this point
Having an idea of where the story is going is pretty much vital. If it's a short story you probably won't need to write an outline, because you should know the whole story already. If it's a novel, then yes, write out an outline, even if it's just a couple of lines:

Ship crashes.
Survivors divide into two groups.
One group terrorises other.
Big fight scene as hero saves the day.

Something like that. It'll keep "writers block" at bay, and also give the story direction.
