i'm a mix. i usually don't come up with my best parts while typing, and i feel much better writing, but whatever.

your brain is your brain. really, you should be able to write just the same either way.

though the thought of the programme closing out just as i am going to save scares me.

I usually write my first draft with paper and pen and then do my first edit while typing it into the computer.

Well i like both, and how much depends on where i am. since i am a student i can't really carry a laptop everywhere like band for instance. but i will always have a pen and paper there. the only downside is that freakin cheerleader who always says "I LOVE YOUR HANDWRITING! doesn't she have such great handwriting." writing with pen and paper is great in the car too, and then when i get home to my laptop i can just pour out what i wrote.

But there are other times when i just NEED my laptop. my fingers get so tired and since i always hold my pen to tightly it gets sore too. i just need the keyboard to pour out my ideas quickly. it really sucks when i am on such a roll and then before i know it i only have 3 hours before the alarm goes off.

So in short, it depends on the person, place and time which one is best.

I'm a mix of both. I have a laptop, but I rarely carry it around with me. I find it easier for a flow of ideas to get going while typing and if I'm in mode for a section of my novel, it's much faster and more emotive for me to type it. I also type short stories and poetry and don't use pen.

For more difficult pieces of my novel and scripts, it gets written out by pen first. I have more time I feel to cut out pieces then, which I won't do on-screen. Notes for any piece of writing of mine are rarely on my laptop - they're also written down by hand.

Computer. I find that when I write with a pen or pencil I get nothing accomplished. I just don't like paper. I honestly can't stand to touch it most days. But, I love my computer. It's so much easier to use. It has spell check and double spacing so I can add in comments about what I'd like to fix later or need to research more on. Plus, I don't have to use an entire eraser each time I sit down to write.

Eh, I only use notebooks when I'm not by my computer. So mainly my PC.

I use both - for different purposes.

I use a pencil (preferred over pen, believe it or not) for my Morning Pages Practice and Free Writing.... and I often use paper and pen in the initial planning stages for a class or for the very earliest percolations on a writing project.

I use the computer for most everything else.

In fact, I take my best nuggets from my morning pages and type them into a document so that I will be sure to (or more likely to) revisit it. Sometimes my morning pages nuggets turn into dialogues or bits of articles or inspiration for something completely different than when I sat there doing my writing practice because I know if I do my practice consistently, everything works better.

I never EVER write by hand. (Unless I'm trying to be sentimental ) I find my laptop gives more freedom. If I'm not quite happy with something I can rewrite it, or go back to the original. It's also easier to remember any ideas for later in the text by leaving notes further on in the document.

Besides, I'm lazy. When it comes right down to it you'll have to type it up yourself or pay someone to do it for you.

I like pen and paper better, but I'm more productive on the computer. I normally write on the computer, I've never had a problem brainstorming on one, and if I don't feel productive, I don't want to write. Plus, when I write, I write as quickly as I can, and my handwriting gets sloppy. Something about that is annoying.

I type much faster than I write, and everything I write out longhand always seems so short when I go back and look at it. I might spend thirty minutes thinking about what I'm going to put down, and it'll take another hour get it on paper. By then, I'm sick of that particular part of the story, and I move to something else. Even if I‘m not totally done. When I type, I don't run into that problem.

I normally carry my laptop with me when I think I'll have the opportunity to use it (45 minutes bus ride, yes. Shopping for something, no), but I try to always carry, at least, a piece of scratch paper and a pencil. If for nothing else than to scribble reminders or one liners down. Often, just as a time killer.

I'll add one more thing, and then stop the rant. I don't feel very safe writing on paper. It gets damaged too easily. I'll spill something on it. I'll accidentally send the paper through the washing machine. On my computer, I can save every half hour and make a backup on one of those 4.7 GB rewritable disks.

pen and paper:
pro: less writer's block. more environment to focus.
con: usage of ink, pace is lessen.

keyboard:
pro: no ink required, easily back tracked and fixed.
con: writer's block, tensity when writing, easily distracted.

A couple of years ago, I hated writing anything out by hand. Of course, a couple years ago I hardle ever wrote, mostly only doing it for school. That meant I always had a computer- espically in middle school where my teacher had nine computers in the classroom . Now I use pencil (never pen unless it's erasable) and a notebook (a rather disorganized one at that...). I'm too poor to afford a lap-top (or to lazy to get a job to get one), so it's not really possible to type it for me when I feel like writing.

Oh, and I've recenlty started writing in cursive again. I realized that it's not only faster than writing in print (but not faster than typing), But it also looks better. My cursive is probably more legible than my print- unless your my brother. He's not so good at reading cursive . Anyway, the point is that I can actually write at a reasonable pace now.

Something I find is that while I write most of my stories on my laptop, I will always use pen in class. I think this comes from high school in which we didn't use computers and everything was written by hand.

I write print most of the time. I use curasive when I don't want anyone to know what I'm writing because my curasive is impossible to read.

I seem to be able to put my thoughts together better when I write with pen and paper....

I prefer paper and pen first to get down the ideas....make changes... just write anything and everything. Once i'm done with that, I go to the computer. Sometimes however I go straight for the computer

With me it's the opposite.I get more writers block with paper. Things come out much easier and more fluid from typing. Same with distraction. Wonder why it affects people differently?
