for 'cataloguing' try using those nifty little colored tabs you can stick on the side of a page... label them with appropriate 'categories' and you can just flip to one and start jotting, keeping all fairly easy to find later... when one notebook gets filled, you can transfer to computer files...

and if you use a small ring binder, you can then file filled pages in a folder, replace with fresh ones...

I remember from elementary school that expository is a form of writing that requires telling or informing the readers about something. I remember we were given info about trees and were required to write an expository story about them for a standardized testing. I thought it was easy and ended up getting a 5 out of 5, which was a really great grade at the time, practically an "S".
