How do you look for inspiration when a block hits?

I've always wondered.... I only have one for when I'm drawing, and that's write backwards in mirror image. It's fun, and I look for shapes in the letters. But the point is what do you do when you have writer's block - sit and wait it out? Scream out your frustration? Or just keep writing nonsense then find that it's actually pretty good and can have a good point in the story? I usually put in an important conversation that I leave especially for that time. But otherwise I don't know.

I go through cover art at Amazon.com or the bookstore and write nonsense stories/situations that come to mind. Mostly what comes out is crap that goes nowhere, but at least it kills time and gives me writing practice. Sometimes later when I'm actually seriously writing a story, some of the old "crap" comes in handy and I find I can actually use it in the story.

I stand in the rain. I have no idea why this works, but it does. Might be the lack of heavy rain here, or any one of the many things I like about it. For whatever reason, it works...

A theory I've found online from a published author:
When writers block strikes, drop two lines, indent, and type:

Suddenly, from nowhere, a naked woman screamed.

i make comic strips of songs i like. i can't draw very well, so most of the time it's just stick figures and what not, but that gives me a place or backround and semi-plot to work with.
Other times I just people watch and try to write character sketches of Joe Blow at the park/on the subway/at the library/whatever.

I've always tried to put the story aside for awhile, and not even think about it. Somehow, thingsusually percolate at the back of my mind, and a solution/inspiration will come to me in a couple of days.

Listening to favorite music, and then putting on music that is associated with the most upsetting moments in my life. This pains me, and brings on if-I-only ideas. I write down some of these ideas and put on comforting music.

Sometimes tuning into a country music station brings on thoughts of travel and escape, of Kmart and mundane things, and that brings on a flood of emotional ideas.

Music, emotional torture. Makes sense.

Selorian is an unknown quantity at this point
I like to listen to music that fits with what I am writing. It usually helps me to come up with something. I also like to use a random story generator and work up a story from the bits it gives me. A good place to find numerous generators is Seventh Sanctum.

I usually go somewhere quiet like a Starbucks, sit down, and jot down notes about the current story I am writing on. And then hopefully I'll see something that strikes me, and continue writing. If that fails, I find falling on the ground kicking and screaming may prove therapeutic against writer's block.

YAY! ^^;;

Wow... people replied... o.O YAY! *dances around in circles before smashing into a tree* Thanks! The ideas are great - I love to stand in the rain, and kicking and screaming out my rage works too... As long as no one's around, lol. [[Faces look so much better when there are three in a row, sorry. ]]

writer's block... a sickening disease

some help:
- kill your main characters, be descriptive and absurd
- have main character go on a binge
- give characters ridiculous super powers
- write life or death scenarios
- have character wake up as opposite sex
- stick character is his own orifice

the point here is to fire the neurons with big explosions. The examples here aren't supposed to be for the story but just a way to try something different while keeping the story somewhere on the back burner. Writing can be a bit like driving. I love to drive but it can really suck sometimes so taking off on the backroads and taking the scenic route just for the hell of it can make a huge difference to the ride.

hope this helps and if nothing else, keep a good sense of humor: Sometimes realizing that what you just wrote was absolute piss can be very rewarding.

when i get writers block if i stop writing it only gets worse, you need a change of pace when you get writers block, you can put down the project your working on until your writers block is gone, just go fishing or go stand in the rain like someone said in an earlier post (sorry i just cant seem to remember who, no offense.). Do whatever it is that you like to do, and when you get back, write about it. It helps, by the time you've finished writing about it your back in the flow and you have your creative energy goin, it seems to work, Good luck!

o.O What?!

I asked my sister was she does and she said that she reads through her whole current story and changes parts so that she can find something to write about at the end of it. Which I have to say is a pretty weird way to get rid of writer's block.... But it seems to work for her. Any other ideas?
