I usually do my best writing where it's quiet and there are no distractions. I try to write a lot in the evenings. I have a laptop, and hubby likes me to spend time with him in the den. But a lot of times, he has the tv up too loud, and it's hard to concentrate. I find I can get some decent writing done at work, during my lunch break, because no one usually bothers me.

Music is a big inspiration. The kind I listen to while writing depends on my mood and the subject matter of my story. With the novel I'm currently working on, I have a collection of songs that remind me of the characters or certain scenes, and sometimes I'll listen to those to get me into the proper mindframe.

Music is more distracting to me thatn other sounds so I don't listen to it. I can tune out voices or street sounds etc. but if I play music it would be something I like and I get caught up in listening and not writing.

When it was just me and my wife I used to write at night but two kids later I have little time at home. Even after they are in bed it is the only time my wife and I have. Now I am relegated to writing on my laptop on the train to and from work. but thats a good two hours so it works.

I tend to do the bulk of my writing at the computer we have in the basement. It must have something to do with the set-up down there. I feel so much more comfortable writing at that computer than anywhere else in the house. The best time for me to write would be Saturday or Sunday mornings before my wife and child wake up. Grab a cup of coffee and let the words flow.

Sometimes I’ll write on the laptop upstairs. My wife hates it when I spend too much time holed up in the basement, so I’ll pick up the laptop and write in the living room while she watches TV. It can be a bit distracting, but I don’t need total silence to write. Actually, background noise is nice – as long as it isn’t too loud, or interesting.

Nelson.

I tend to write just whenever I can. I have even been known to write during class before. It seems to be when I do my best writing (not that I'm recomending it or anything).

For me, the later in the day or the eariler in the morning, the better. I think it has something to do with the conscious mind not being able to focus, and letting your subconscious into more control, which usually allows people to think of more original ideas quicker. At least, I'm assuming that's what it is. lol. I could be wrong.

I actually remember reading (somewhere) that the human mind is more creative at 2-3 in the morning. I have no idea why though... I, too, am a night owl but only because I like having free-reign of the streets.

But what if the kids say something clever? Sometimes they get ya thinking about things most of us normally take for granted. You'd be surprised at what ya can think up while watching kids running around screaming. Their games, the way they act; it's a lot of truth about the world.

True true. You never know when inspiration will strike. I've written on buses, in restaurants, at bars, in the attic, basement and kitchen, on a roadtrip, everywhere. I'll be at a party and something will hit me and regardless of the loud music and people yelling, I steadily jot down the lines. But being comfortable is key.

Maybe for some people, silence is needed to let the thoughts come more easily. But I love the variety of the world. I've passed people and heard them say one sentence that perfectly fit in my poem or story or whatever. "Can you leave a number I can reach you at?" lol. It's a perfect line. Real world, real events, real life. It don't get much better than that.

I have a very clean routine. No clutter, I have very little furniture (by choice) but I watch a lot of TV and I read a lot. A simplified routine saves complexity for thought but variety can inspire greatness in art.

I try to write every day. The problem I run into is that my family thinks they can come and go and interrupt me at will. They pop into my area to check emails, watch tv, or just see what I'm doing. I'm about to go nuts. I have not written a single thing that I believe is good enough to submit for publication in months. Now, I am stuck trying to write from 10pm until about 1am, but it's not my usual time of productivity. Consequently, I can't reallly focus on what I want to write and instead play on the machine and post to this forum! I need a change...

I definately am a night person.... and like many of you guyz get my best ideas at night. I also write well when I'm angry and/ or upset. I write best on the computer and I almost wish I had an ability to write on paper as well.... and without it being a hassle !

Usually in class when I find myself bored. Which happens a lot. I remember back in 7th grade, my teacher - every class - told us to take out a peice of paper and write. It could be about anything we wanted, or about a question she would ask us. My friend and I would write about fantasy, like a dark elf warrior finding his way in some sort of situation. This was really good idea, which I would implement if I was a teacher. Because everyday my friend and I would pick up where we left off, or tell about what happened before the other parts. I just wish we got them back, I probabl would have had an amazin book by now.

I think and am more active in the night hours. Unfortunitely when I'm working I can't sit there and write till late at night I have to get up too early, and need at least eight hours of sleep. Otherwise I'm miserable. daytime is more likely for me and writing, but it dampens my creativity and speed

I can only write effectively when I'm alone. As part of my university course last year I had to do a lot of writing with other people, which I found extremely offputting.

As to where I write - anywhere I can find inspiration.

I find writing at night much easier. Definately lets the words flow a lot more easily.

And, strangely enough, I also find a lot of inspiration and sheer urge-to-write happening in class. (Usually English Lit, sometimes Language, so I guess that's part of the reaosn.)

As for music it depends. I sometimes turn it off finding it gets in the way, but then again sometimes I find some music really inspiring. Ie. Greenday.

I don't write everyday, but when I do it's generally between 7pm - 2am, sitting in my room on my bed with music playing. I can rarely write anywhere else at any other time.

The place that I usually write at is my desk, in my room. I don't need to, but usually I do it around 9pm. I feel that my mind is much more clear this time of day and I'm not too tired. I'll usually light some incense, make cup of tea or hot chocolate. Listen to music, any kind. When I'm not at home I carry a little black book around to scribble down ideas and drawings that come to me in.
