Personally I prefer Wingdings.

Just gives my piece of work that "special" touch. My lecturers don't agree with me...

LOL, awesome. . .

Anyways, hmmmmm. . . I think Times New Roman is good. I'm just not used to Courier I suppose. . . but anyways, different fonts look different on different computers for some reason. . . on some computers, Verdana, Tahoma, or Trebuchet MS are okay for me. . . on others, they're just ANNOYING.

Overall, TNR is your best bet.

Dark Courier and Courier10 BT. Find em download em and use em. They both come out darker when printed. They are a writers friend. Especially the Courier10 BT.

Thanks to bobothegoat for pointing out that Times New Roman isn't a monospaced font.

As for publishing fonts... Well, as some pros have already said, in terms of submissions there are standards that are used, but as for personal choices, I prefer the Garamond font. All Roman fonts are basically the same, but I like Garamond because I like the way it looks a little more, plus it's not as widely used as Times and thus it won't look as commonplace. It also looks more professional to my eyes and more... classic.

Um, if yer submitting stuff to publishers, a lot of people say monospaced, Times, Courier, like above -- but if I'm just typing and not worried with submitting just yet, Verdana is pretty good. I've always liked Verdana. Maybe I'm just used to using it but it's the perfect font in my opinion. I think the font yer readin right now on this page is Verdana. Is it not? I'm not sure but if it is, that's gotta say something about it eh?

When typing a massive text, I get tired and switch between 10 pt Verdana Bold at 130% zoom, 12 pt Perpetua, 10 pt Prestige at 120% zoom, and 10 pt and 12 pt News.

Perpetua and then TNR is the most compact for packing words into fewer pages.

From what i've heard Courier New 12 is best if your planning on sending to editor or publisher, i like it because its a neat font, not to big, not to small and the words dont run together. Times new Roman and Courier New are the most widely accepted though.

it doesn't make much [if any] sense to switch fonts, when the only ones you can send your work out in are times new roman or courier [12 pt only]...

most publishers these days seem to prefer courier, and it's the easiest on the eyes, so it seems to me that's the only one it makes sense to use... if you find that some of the publishers you want to approach prefer times, you can convert it at that point...

why do you want to pack the pages?... it's hard to read and even harder to edit your work that way...

i do pack the pages of printed copies of my work for my own permanent files, but they're not going anywhere and no one but me is ever going to read them... i can see why you might want to conserve paper [my reason for squeezing down file copy], but you can do that by printing later drafts on the backs of earlier ones [draw a line thru the old one, so you won't mix 'em up]...

Why packing pages? It's not for printed archives. I stumbled ont he situation where a publisher asked to use very narrow margins, 1-1/2 spaced, 1.5 in. headers and footers, and said that I should use whatever font I had that was most compact.

that publisher was a rare exception to the rule, teflon... any i've ever come across want double-spacing and only 12 pt size... font most preferred is courier and times new roman is the only other acceptable one for mss submitted to the vast majority of houses... and to agents, as well...
