Tips for scheduling interviews for a novice writer

As a starting freelance writer, I’m trying to focus on writing interview/profile articles about salient executives and politicians. I have a couple of years of experience interviewing these type of people while working for a company that produced advertorials and promotional reports about investment opportunities in developing countries, distributed with major US and European newspapers.

In my previous job things were made easy for scheduling interviews: being able to send a letter to a minister or a CEO, saying that the report where she would be featured would be distributed with a recognized magazine or newspaper, certainly helped in making her save some space for me in her schedule.

But how is it when you are on your own as a freelancer? Should I wait until having a solid assignment from a magazine or newspaper to schedule the interview? How likely is it to get a solid assignment without having a confirmed interview with the personality you wish to feature in the article?

Thanks in advance!!

No real ideas, unfortunately.

Umm, try squeezing into press conferences. Try contacting people you've interviewed before and asking for their help. Say, you want to talk to the minister for community development, and twelve months ago you interviewed the minister for planning and infrastructure. Ring the P&I minister and see if they can arrange a meeting with the CD minister.

Of course if you ripped into the P&I minister this is probably not going to work.
