Publishing question

If I live in the US, can I get publishers in outside countries---like UK and Canada---to publish me? Or do you just have to get it published in the US first and then it might go over?

There are many publishers who might be willing to consider a work from any country on the merit of the work itself. However, I don't think they would necessarily give an American preferential treatment. Perhaps the opposite. I would exhaust every publisher in the US before looking elsewhere.

The US is also the biggest market in the world. To be perfectly honest, you have more chance of being published in the US than anywhere else, purely from a commercial perspective.

(I appear to be a bit of a capitalist, don't I?)

But you've got a point. Tor books (http://www.tor.com/) publishes a lot of my favourite authors, so you've got a chance with them. There are also numerous online publishers who, for a nominal fee, will publish your book, cover design and all. A friend of mine published his book ("The Sky of Peleg" by Twelve, if you're curious) that way. It was pricier than most paperbacks, but it got his work out into the world.

Besides, american publishers often sell books worldwide, if you're worried about widespread distribution.

My first traditional publisher was in Alberta, Canada. The problems came when royalties were due, but we worked that out.
You can get entirely free publishing, the cost being no more than the price of however many copies of your book you want. You can retain all rights. I do that, and use the very professional POD copies I get as submissions, plus I sell a few direct.
Piers Anthony has a website that lists a lot of publishers and rates them. Its at http://www.hipiers.com/publishing.html
