People won't steal your novel ideas. If they'll still anything, it's going to be poems and short stories, because novel ideas mean you have to bust your ass working on it and I doubt that someone who's stealing work will want to waste their time stealing an IDEA.

Oh no, we won't steal it.
*Gets out a notepad*

Anyhow, people take risks everyday. It's a part of life. Every time you cross a road, you risk getting killed by a drunk driver. Every time you go outaide, even, you rish being mugged. Are they likely? No. Are they possible? Yes.
It's the same thing with work being stolen off of forums.

The only person who can make this decision is yourself. It's not the responsibility of the other forum members, but you. YOU be the one to decide. Don't defer to anyone else.

I will post, sometime, whenever that may be, and in whatever universe I may be occupying.

If you really don't trust us, then go find some friends to review it. You really don't have to post here.

I could do that.....but I'm trying to find somebody that'll tell me the truth about it. Not my friends, not my parents. I'm just gonna write it, send it out, and if I get rejection letters, its not-so-good. If I dont (yeah, right) then it must be fantastic.

The only problem is that you won't know what to change and won't get feedback. Friends can be more honest then you think, especially if you happen to not mention that you are the author.

Yeah, it works wonderfull. Tell them you just found it on the internet and thought they'd like it. People can be brutally honest about things they find on the internet.

You could join a writing group or taking a creative writing course if you don't want to post here and/or show them to friends and family.

I find workshopping your work with other writers in a group discussion enviornment incredibly helpful, rewarding and fun. Plus you get to read and critique other people's work which is just as essential in developing your skills.

Do you have any advice about finding a workshop? I've always been looking for one but also a little nervous, I'm not naturally shy (quite the loud in fact) but, it'd be awkward to go to a workshop for adults. I wish I could find some teen-ones.

You might be able to find some writer's club or young writer's club in the paper or something. I'm taking a creative writing course at University, so I'm not too sure where one could look for writing clubs. But I suggest checking the paper, or bulletins at colleges and stuff. Or you could always start your own.

I understand your apprehension about joining a workshop, my class is full of incredibly, incredibly talented writers, but if you stick with it, you'll develop nice relationships with them and it will ultimately benefit your work, especially if you feel comfortable about being blunt with each other.

The most important downsider to being your ownly critique is that you know what's going to happen, down to the last detail. You could end up in a situation where a joke is impossible for a reader to get, or you got rid of a chapter (since you know what happens in between, it won't confuse you, but it might seem choppy or confusing for the reader), or a secret might seem so obvious because you've thought about it for so long, but to the reader it's an exciting puzzle. So yeah, I think that getting a friend is mandatory before submitting your story.

As for writing groups.... Teachers might also have some access to them. I remember once in grade six, everyone used to refer to me as "The Class Writer" and there wasn't a single kid who didn't know I wanted to be an author. At one point, the teacher pulled me aside to this creative art course thing for the day, and asked if I wanted to go (it was free.) There were all sorts of activities and you got to choose more than one art form, a speech, a book sale... it was really fun, so be sure to ask your english teacher.
