Advice for New Writer

I have written 1 book and am on the start of another. When I was writing my first efforst I felt I had a good plot, ideas and characters, but I also knew there was something missing. I was then told to read, read, read so that I can get a feel for writing, but as I read, my own ideas become intertwined with the plots and characters of the books I was reading.
1. I write from the heart and my ideas can come quick and fast, but should I be more calculating in my writing?
2. Does reading books enchance or hinder you as a writer?

I'll answer the second question first: it is essential. But, it is important that you read as a writer and not as a reader. Observe the way more skilled writers get their ideas across. Watch how they develop the plot and characters.

As for the first question, it's just the opposite. Write as a reader. What do you look for in books as a reader? As far as being 'calculating', you should definately have an idea in mind at all times: what are you trying to convey to the reader? Things like foreshadowing and imagery are subtle, and require that the writer has definate idea for their purpose. Also, you should do as much research as possible before starting your work.

When you write, write from the heart, and when you are finished, edit as a reader. Just write whatever you want about anything, and don't bother to really even look at what you are writing. The go back later and be as critical as you can about everything. I suggest that you edit for plot and then grammar/spelling, but you probably have your own way. Try to model the way that you edit around the way that some of your favourite books are written, which does make reading especiallly essential.

That's one way, but I find its easier if you have a clear idea in your mind about where you want to go with your story beforehand.

I have a little journal of sorts, where if an idea pops into my idea, I write it and save it for later. There are a few good threads in this forum about the writing process. I think every writer has their own unique way of going about it.
