Time and Chapters

So my question is, does the time in which the character does something effect the order in which you put your chapters? Thing is, some things happen in a day, but I don't want to have all the character's scenes finished by the fifth chapter, and I want to stretch it out here and there, so that the reader can catch up on another character before meeting up with the previous one again. Also, my chapters only focus on one set of characters at a time, and one plot, and they're not mixed together.

For example, say one character is travelling to Hell (literally), another is arriving in Cuba, and the Pres (vacationing in Cuba) is being assassinated. The travel to hell takes a year, the trip to Cuba a week, and the assassination a day. Would I be able to mention the first five months of my character travelling to hell, and then skip onto the character who's going to Cuba, even though it hasn't been five months? Or do I have to bring up Cuba after a week of the character who's travelling to hell? And if a day passes for the Pres, does a day pass for the other characters?

(That's not my plot by the way. Thank God.)

This si all up to you, you have to make it fit. It's your story. Of course it can work, you just have to find the correct way based on you plot and storyline.

I've seen it all different ways. For example, what I just finished, a short novel of about 30-35,000 words takes place over the course of one week. Each chapter is one day, and is titled that, except for day 7 which is divided into time of day. I'd say just divide it whichever way you think is best, because there is no standard for chapter division

BTW, sounds like a cool plot, if you aren't using it can I have it?

Same here, just give the reader concrete dates, or something to keep track of the time change between Cuba and Hell, and you should be o.k.
