How to set up pages...

I know this has been touched on briefly before, but I'm wondering if there is a concrete answer to this.

If a person is writing a novel, what is the standard page size one should use in Word (or whatever program you're using to type your story)? And does it need to be double spaced? I've been typing mine in single space, using Times Roman 12 pt font on a regular 8.5 x 11 setup. Do most publishers have a rule about this?

And when they're counting the number of pages, I would assume that they're going to count them after the story is formatted into the correct page and font size, right?

Thanks!

I personally use a 12pt font and double space. You should always use courier or any monospaced font. I only do this because this is what I was told should be a good manuscript format since I was young. And it just grew on me. If it's not formatted like this then it just doesn't look right to me.

and the prerequisite google search

and there ya go.

Thank you for the help, rashadow. I've started reading the articles, and they're very helpful. It looks as though I'll have to start indenting my chapters instead of using extra space in between to separate them.

Do you have any idea if this is the format that publishers use when they count page numbers in order to classify a book, novel, novella, etc?

Thanks again!

Publishers count words, not pages of ms.
