These two statements contradict each other, unless I am misreading the first one. If you submit something with mistakes (and trust me, THEY will notice, as will readers, no matter how small), then your submission will be tossed. So I think you should try to get it a close to perfect as possible, that's always been my technique.
Sorry, I really can't justify that without an example...

How have you gone with proofing and editing other things you've written. This is your first novel, right? well, how do you go about roofing short stories and stuff like that? Or do you just leave them at the firstdraft stage?
I find the longer the work, the more time it takes to edit and such. Not only because of the sheer length, but my characters seem to have a life of their own and change things, then i have to check for consistancy. It means reading through a lot of times and taking notes.
Once I started a story (this was only about five pages or so) and by the tim I finishe's it a character's name had changed from John to Jack!
so, I'd suggest just get writing, and whatever you do, don't send in a first drafe, unedited to the publishers, I don't think they'll thankyou for it.

If you think as you're putting it in the envelope, this could be better, don't put it in the envelope.

That isn't to be so crude as to imply you may never put it in the envelope, but you have to be really really happy with it, and those wh've read it, and set it out according to the numerous guidelines on the net for submission before you bother.

If you were an editor, and someone sent you something amidst the 50 or so MS they receive a day, would you bother to read it if they clearly couldn't be bothered?
