I only force myself to write when I am typing something on my computer I have already written on paper. I never force myself to 'create'.

A method, which I don't recomend, is to tape a pistol to your monitor, aimed at you- the only problem with that method though, is that I can't type cuz my hands are in the air.

Meh- It all depends I think on how serious you want to be about writing- It's like any job- you either do it, or decide you werren't cut out for it and find something else.

Work is just that- Work. Writing is no different. In fact, writing can be more work mentally than a typical job at times.

How seriously do you want to write? Do you want it to be a past time where you write only occasionally? Or Do you wish to make a career out of it?

There is always time during the day to write. Just like anything else, you can find the time or you can't find the time. The choice is up to you.

I agree with you. I could never force myself to write. All attempts result in lack of creativity and the sense of "me" in these poems. So I have not written poetry in a long while for that reason. I'll just let myself be inspired again, because I really love poetry and want to write more than just two best poems in my life.

Forcing yourself to write is kind of like an oxymoron. Its kind of like saying, "hmm, I could make a lot of money writing, let's give it a try." You are either a writer or not. My friend is an artist, he draws and paints. If he thinks of something cool, he puts it on canvas, otherwise he just goes about his normal routine. You can't force your self to create something. It's like me and my regular job. I'm a cop. Arrests make me over time, great right? Easy way to make money. But I can't just arrest anyone for the hell of it. If you have something to write, write it. Otherwise, you will probably force yourself to write something that's not so good.

Well i suppose it depends what you want to write. I've often had to force myself to write - not fiction though, but newspaper articles. It's good money, but when you don't feel like writing the best thing to do is to just get on with it. Make a note your diary that between so and so o'clock you're busy. Then just sit down and get it done. Lol, it's not working well though, I'm writing this post... damn; I'd better go I've got work to do .
But you might want to just try that idea, set a certain amount of time aside each day or week and just sit down and write or think of ideas or read if you really just don't feel like writing. Or go for a walk in the town and take a note pad with you. I never take a notepad with me, but when I'm out I often find myself thinking, this would be a great story, i should be writing this down...

I don't really "force" myself to write in the literal sense. I do occasionally sit down and just write, but I don't see it as forcing myself to create something. I just sit down and think "What comes next in the story?" or "What happens now?" and then I write about it. It usually takes me a little while to get into the flow of things and write something productive and worthy of keeping, but all in all it works.
I would say that putting time aside every so often for writing is a good idea. It is a good antidote for writer's block as well.
So long as you aren't forcing yourself to churn out words and pages without saying anything worth meaning, I would say go for it. Just make sure you are really writing something you can be proud of.

I try to sit down and write at the same time everyday. During the day as I'm going about my daily routine, I'm planning out what I'm going to write so when I sit down at the keyboard there's no wasted time. I fire the bad boy up and I'm ready to go.

When I'm writing I don't have on the radio, television or go online. I don't answer the phone. My wife and I have a signal worked out: if she sees the basement door open, it's okay to interrupt me. If the door is closed she won't bother me unless the house is on fire.

It may seem more like penance than creative enjoyment but it all works toward getting my head in the right frame of mind to sit down and produce 3000 to 5000 words a day. I don't believe in waiting for inspiration to strike.

Well I guess not really making myself write. I've got the stoies in my head and they are ready to be put to paper, but then I....don't... I don't know if its fear of failure or... something else but....

I do tend to force myself sometimes, usually it isn't as good as my other stuff, but then when I am in the right frame I can go back and touch it up.

I find that music is a fantastic aid to get me into the right mood for pretty much any sort of writing I want to do. For instance, I listen to something I find sad or that hits a particular soft spot if I want to write in that tone, great for poetry. Things like Close to me by The Cure, Unguarded moment by The Church, Alot of matchbox 20, stuff like that is great for me.

I find that God of thunder by Kiss is great for writing something alot more Lovecraftian, it just seems to do it for me.

Most of the time I just play it until I'm in the right frame of mind, then turn it off so it doesn't distract me unless I need a top up of creativity, then write!

Give it a try, it can't hurt any and hey, it might help you like it helps me

Kimberly Bird is an unknown quantity at this point
Ummm, in order to be good at what you are doing and to learn, you must force yourself to a cetrtain degree. Because you write down a poem, a short story, or paint a wall, this does not make you a writer, this does not make you a poet, this does not make you a painter. It takes perseverence, dertermination, and dedication daily.

Rethink what you people are saying please for the love of writing.

What does that last sentence mean? I believe you are saying you should force yourself, basically disagreeing with the most of us. So if that is what you mean, then I re-think what I said....
..and I come up with the same thought...

You cannot force yourself to be good at something. You either are or you aren't, period. You can force yourself to write for fun I guess, but that wouldn't be fun now would it?

Perhaps "force" isn't the most appropriate word, more "practice" I think. Sometimes you need to give yourself a shove to do anything in life, and, practice is the only way to improvement. Even if the talent is there to start with, it begins raw and refines with practice I think, and yea, like anything in life, sometimes people can tend to not be bothered but know it must be done.
