It's too bad.

It would have been so awesome if you two actually knew each other.

I just thought of something...

...and equally better if both of you put all your energy into avoiding the fact that you stalk a writers message board =]

It would of been cool. But don't you think that "Stalk" is a strong word? ^^'

Supporting yourself through fiction writing would be hard. But if you enjoy other kinds of writing, it isn't that difficult to get a writing job that pays a real salary.

Before I "retired", I was working as a copywriter with a small, local advertising agency. I wrote print copy, radio commercials, that kind of stuff. My very first job, actually, was working as a journalist for a local daily broadsheet. It was fun, but very hard work since it isn't a desk job. At the end of the day, though, you do need to write. And write well... or face your editor's sarcastic tongue. *nervous laugh*

The best kind of writing work I enjoyed, however, is the kind I don't have to depend on for a living. After getting married, I was writing freelance articles and features for the paper I used to work for. (It pays to maintain contact with your editors even after you leave the paper.) Writing book reviews, commentaries on TV shows, travel articles and all that. I also had the opportunity to write my own fortnightly personal column. That was the most fun! Because I could write whatever I wanted. (I'm lazy... *smile* )

Now I'm writing purely fiction. And purely for fun. I don't get any money out of it, but I'm enjoying it immensely. The difference between writing for a living and writing for yourself: deadlines and the pressure to perform. When you're making money, your responsibility (to your editors and your readers) is so much heavier. It does affect the way you approach your writing. Well, it did affect mine. I derived more pleasure out of being able to decide what I wanted to write, in whatever style I needed, with loads of time on my side. Working with deadlines requires a lot of discipline. It makes you realize writing isn't about inspiration. But the dogged determination to write every single day, whether you feel like it or not.

Sorry for rambling. I have a tendency to do that... *runs away*

Where did you get the idea that writing isn't work?

When you have a job you love, it isn't really work, is it? Even if it does take effort.

Heehee, no, stalk is the right word. I use it all the time now instead of good old hang out. I'd go up to my friends and be like, "Yeah, I'm going to stalk you this lunch" and "hold on while I go stalk someone else" or "mind if I stalk you guys?"

I,m lucky i,m published and earning a very good living
Its all luck
If you feel you can write
Maybe
If others feel you can write sometimes you can
If the publisher thinks its OK
then you have a chance
If it gets published
The public will let you know
Then its easy if they like it
After that no problem you only have to write the next one
LOL
