Editing Tips

I've been giving this advice to practically everyone whose stories I've read:

Read your work aloud.

My English and History teachers in eighth grade both advocated this ad nauseum, but I never believed them until I tried it for myself. Yes, it's awkward, yes, it makes you feel like a complete fool (even if you do it in the privacy of your own room), but it also works. By reading your writing aloud, you can greatly improve the flow of sentences and you'll probably be able to catch a lot of grammar mistakes, since reading aloud will force you to read through your writing carefully.

Of course, it would be even more helpful to read your writing aloud to others, but since I'm not even brave enough to do that I won't go about suggesting that to you.

That's just my two cents anyway

Good advice, Though it doesn't work for me, I hear many people benifit by saying what they are writing outloud while writing it. (This is best when you have some privacy)

Yeah, sometimes I do that. I've actually tried recording myself reading it and then playing it back. That's even better; you notice more mistakes and awkward places. But sometimes it's just too much to do something like that if your piece is really long. . .
