Torn

Do you ever get the anchoring to write so bad, but you can't seem to get anything out? That was me last week. I work a full time job (not in writing) and all the while I am working, I am thinking about what I could be writing if I were to write right now. When ever I got a block of time enough to get anything out, something else come up. Drives me crazy.

So, I am torn. Torn between forcing myself to write, which I don't want to do because it makes it feel like work. I want to write for enjoyment. Or to let it happen if it happens at all. Does that make sense?

If I am to wait and let it happen, my mind may interfere with it, and I may procrastinate writing without even knowing it. I would almost rather force the issue a bit, but not to the point that I no longer want to sit down to write.

Sometimes, the desire to write is a message, urging you to have faith. I usually find that when I really want to write something, I'm better off trying, even if I don't -feel- divinely inspired. Writing comes from other things, which is why I abandoned the idea of a personal muse and abandoned the pursuit of the skirts of inspiration. You'd be surprised what you can do sometimes when you don't feel like writing. It might help you realize that some of writing is work, but it is work that is worthwhile.

Procrastination is the devil. I would suggest almost anything to prevent procrastination.

Well, first of all, I think the word you're looking for is hankering, since 'anchoring' means to hold down, or something along those lines. Sorry, that was just a little nitpicky thing that I couldn't resist pointing out- my friends don't call me the grammar police for nothing!

Anyway, I can't say I've ever had exactly the same experience for you, or actually, maybe it is the same, I don't know. I've heard this works well, though I wouldn't know- whenever you get those urges to write, why don't you just pick up a pen and start writing whatever comes to mind? Sort of like a stream of consciousness, I suppose. That might relieve your drive, and also, something amazing could come out of it- you never know! Hope this helps

You could always do what I do: keep Microsoft Word open really small at the bottom of your computer and write your heart out when things lull at work. Some people may think this is dishonest (man, i love that eye roll smiley!), but then at least you can use the muse when it hits instead of waiting until later and loosing the vibe.
Of course this all depends on you having an office job. Some people in my position would get really frustrated when there isn't much work to do around the office. I keep myself busy during the quiet periods by writing, and found that it is during the work day that I get my best writing done. Probably 'cause I'm thinking I'd like to be anywhere other than work!!
