I was a trained singer, all my life. Never even thought about writing, altho my husband & I loved poetry, and read it frequently to each other. I started writing valentines to him and he cherished them, and when he became ill and passed away, I found writing poetry cathartic. I just wrote about my feelings, anquish, loss, acceptance, missing him etc., and shared them with my friends, who were also going thru the same thing.
I discovered I had the power to really touch them, and in most cases, comfort them thru my writings. (Most of my early poems were about death and dying,) and much to my surprise, a whole religious collection!
(I've since graduated to humour and lighter subjects.) Of course, it would be wonderful to be published and make some much needed money, but knowing I can touch and comfort someone, or make them smile, is incentive enough for me!
My poems may never win any literary prizes for technique, but I write for the common man to read and understand. It's not for everyone.
