Rather go for the smaller contests than the big ones to start off with. Very few writers win contests with their first few attempts, but you'll have a better chance if you go for the less high-profile events that aren't attracting entries from the dedicated professionals.
Go for the big ones later on, once you've got a bit of experience with the way these things work.
So... you're looking for contests? There are hundreds, nay thousands of them out there. Lit.org has a contests category which you may want to look at (in fact, I recall seeing a whole load of new entries in there this very week), so that's a good place to start.
There's also a contests section here on WritingForums, but it's not as big as on the main Lit.org site.
The other place to look would be in the classified ad pages of the various writers magazines.
But as I said, there's hundreds of contests out there; there's a lot with web pages, but probably even more without. It's a case of knowing where to look.
If you find any good contests that you want to share with the other members here, we'd love to see you post them to the site.
Finally, bear in mind that most contests (especially poetry contests) require that the work be previously unpublished, so that may be something to watch out for.
