Music and writing

I am curious how many people listen to music when they write and if so what kind. I find that music goves me the real thought that i need. Marilyn Manson for some reason really allows me to get out what i need to get out. I guess maybe because i am more of a dark writer than anything else. I am just curious to see what people listen to and what makes them write.

Hi Mike, there was a post already started on this subject. I just can't remember in which area. If it helps, I can't listen to music while I write, before yes but never during. By the way, I love Manson's song; Beautiful People.

Bye for now.

i listen to a cd full of techno music...don't ask me why cuz i dont quite know. its a mix of pure instrumental and also vocal techno...some is soothing and some is quite upbeat. it helps me concentrate.

same here....I prefer some sort of Trance. Vocal is nice but sometimes the lyrics can interfere with my train of thought--some progressive or melodic usually does the trick .

Robert Jordan suggests Classical music. It helps it flow better, he says. I myself either listen to techno trance or 80's hair bands!

I personally cant write at all without music, and it has to be the right music too.

It helps my creative juices flowing to listen to music while writing, but I can't write to vocal stuff I normally listen to. I usually like classical or instrumental when writing. Enya is nice, I also like instrumental soundracks like lord of the rings, final fantasy, phantom of the opera...etc.

And then sometimes i'm in a mood where I have to turn off the music and be silent, but I basically just work on a whim.

I can go either way, but it usually helps me greatly with music. I perfer Mid to upbeat Classical music. Michael W. Smith's album "Freedom" is one I usually listen to. It's perfect for me.

I also like New Age styled instrumental music, like the Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamroller) Fresh Aire collection.

Well I always listen to music when I am writing. It kind of adds to the effect of being off in my own world. Kind of like having some of your own theme music. What I listen to is relative to what I am writing. If I am writing a angry piece I listen to Black Flag and Bad Religion if I am writing about my reflections I listen to trance. I listen to a wide varity of music.

I tend to listen to classical, most notably, The Planets, The Enigma Variations, Chausson's Poeme, some Django is in there too. Although I don't usually listen to them when I write I doubt I'll ever get tired of the Beatles.

I actually tend to listen to old bebop and jazz stuff as I write. For some strange reason, that seems to bring out a wide variety of emotions, and stuff like anger, depression and bitterness are drawn directly from the songs. Strange, neh?

I think I'm the minority here! I can't write with music on...I keep singing along and I can't format my sentences. I guess I'm just weird!

btw- I love Manson. Going to his concert next month.

I listen to music a lot when I am writing, sometimes it helps get me thinking and i start to write what comes into mind.
I listen to Classic Rock'N'Roll...EX: Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Jimi Hendrix, or just turn on a radio station and listen to what ever is on it usually 94.5 The Hawk and other Rock stations. Music soothes the soul and lets you have fresh thoughts is what I believe. It also depends on the mood you are in though. Like if I am in a bad mood I put on hate music... With a lot of screaming and bad words and ""psycho stuff"" LOL... It calms me down anyways, and then you can put on other music, that is a little less harsh or mellow. When I am happy I put on Rock'N'Roll or other good music like church singing and nature and stuff. No matter what it is you are feeling, and nomatter what it is you listen to, music can get you to write. If it doesn't help you to write or if you just don't listen to music while you write because you can't concentrate then maybe it is something else that gets you going. Mostly it is music for me. *smiles*
